SUMMARY

The discussion centers on simulating a test weight of 10-20 Kg using a pneumatic cylinder and a steel plate. The user inquires about the pressure required to achieve this force, initially assuming a constant pressure regardless of piston size. However, the conclusion is that the necessary pressure is contingent upon the cross-sectional area of the pneumatic piston, which directly influences the force exerted.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of pneumatic cylinder mechanics
  • Knowledge of pressure calculations (force/area)
  • Familiarity with material properties of steel
  • Basic principles of weight and force simulation
NEXT STEPS
  • Research pneumatic cylinder specifications and sizing
  • Learn about pressure and force relationships in fluid mechanics
  • Explore material selection for weight simulation applications
  • Investigate methods for accurately measuring applied pressure
USEFUL FOR

Engineers, product designers, and anyone involved in testing and simulating mechanical forces in product development.

I need to simulate a test weight of between 10 and 20 Kg on top of a product. I am planning to do this by compression, via a steel plate directly attached to the arm of a pneumatic cylinder. The product, (and steel plate), dimensions are 5 1/2" x 1 5/8", (or 14cm x 4.1cm for you youngsters!). Am I correct in assuming that I need to apply a pressure of between 2.8 lbs/sq in, (0.17kg/sq cm), and 5.6 lbs/sq in, (0.35kg/sq cm), to the top of the pneumatic piston, regardless of the size of that pneumatic piston?

No.

The pressure you need to apply to your cylinder to provide that given force will depend on the cross-sectional area of your piston.
