Discover the Best Solid State Physics Textbooks for Beginners
I've also found it very frustrating that the best solid state books are very outdated. On one hand, you have a plethora of QFT books, or some version thereof for condensed matter systems (Fradkin, Wen, Tsevelik). But I don't know of good modern solid state books that gap well the bridge...- 6eecs

What is the best Quantum Field Theory book for self-study?
Actually, I find Zee hard because he handwaves his way through, which makes some stuff difficult to follow. Srednicki to some extent has been easier on me b/c he actually explicitly computes stuff out.- 6eecs

What is the best Quantum Field Theory book for self-study?
Hi, I'd like to ask recommendation for a QFT book. I have seen several other recommendations on this forum, but hopefully I'll provide enough info so you guys can have more specific advice. Background: QM (Griffiths, some parts of Sakurai), GR (Carroll), some residue...- 6eecs

Hot Areas in EE: Job Growth, Development, & More
What are the hot areas in EE right now? By "hot", I mean the areas with the most job growth, the most prospect for development, the most needs and the most questions to be answered. (Analog devices? Digital design paradigms? Signal Processing? Meta-materials? Optical Networks...- 6eecs

Is My Course Load Too Much for a Physics Degree in 2 Years?
Your schedule is very doable, for someone who is decently smart and hardworking. I am doing approximately the same schedule for my freshman/sophomore yr, and it's pretty chill so far.- 6eecs

Need a bit of help finding a good textbook
Since you sound like a smart guy, I would recommend: "Introduction to mechanics" by Kleppner&Kolenkow. Beware though, it is on a whole higher level than halliday resnick stuff If you want a theoretical mechanics textbook, Landau Lifgarbagez vol.1 is great. (you need multivariable calculus and...- 6eecs

I don't want to wait to become a physicist
Have you done any math/science olympiad yet? (AMC, AIME, USAMO?) There's also a physics olympiad (USAPhO), which is pretty decent. You should definitely prep for that, the problems are pretty challenging and interesting. Schools like MIT/Caltech regard very highly of people who do well at...- 6eecs

I don't want to wait to become a physicist
My advice to you would be not to rush, and take your time. There's a whole lot more you could study before going to undergrad (for free), by self-studying quality books. By doing so, you would benefit more from your undergrad experience. Done with calc BC? THen study multivariate calculus...- 6eecs

Can You Transition from Physics BS to MEng in EE Easily?
I was wondering if it was possible to do physics BS then MEng in EE without making up too many courses? My goal is to end up working in the industry, so that's why I'm thinking about doing the MEng in EE (I also enjoy analog part of EE, as well as the solid-state device design). If I plan to...- 6eecs

Admission to Theoretical Physics PhD Programs
Hello, I was wondering, to gain admission to decent programs in Theoretical Physics (PhD), should you have done theoretical physics research in undergrad? The reason I am asking is because theoretical physics research has lots of prerequisites, and I might not be able to finish all those...- 6eecs

Schools What Does It Take to Get Accepted into a Top Physics Grad School?
Hello, I am an undergraduate currently studying at MIT, and I have read zapper's thread on the path of the academic physicist. I was wondering, however, what it REALLY takes to get accepted into a top institution for theoretical physics OR experimental physics. Reference to specific...- 6eecs

Graduate Math for Physicists: Preparing for Grad Level Physics
Well, what I reasoned was that I'll get enough PDE's in my intermediate and advanced E&M course that I don't really think I need an extra class for that.- 6eecs

Graduate Math for Physicists: Preparing for Grad Level Physics
At my school, we apparently don't have a "math for physicists" type of course, which summarizes all the more advanced math that physicists need to know. The only requirement is: multivariate calc (finished), differential eqn (finished), linear algebra. I heard, however, that the grad level...- 6eecs
