(Rigorously) Prove that two medians of a triangle intersect
Thanks for the approaches. I'll try them out. (I suspect it may not be easily possible given what's been presented up to that point in the book, but again, I could just be missing something completely. If I'm still stumped later, I'll write to the author (the translator, actually).)- aneesh.mulye

(Rigorously) Prove that two medians of a triangle intersect
I'm trying to solve exercise 60 from Kiselev's Planimetry. Homework Statement "Show that in any triangle, every two medians intersect. Is the same true for every two bisectors? altitudes?" Homework Equations There aren't any, unfortunately. The Attempt at a Solution The last part of the...- aneesh.mulye

Math Becoming a mathematician - how important is IQ?
A few observations: 1) IQ is important for mathematical success, no doubt. 2) However, IQ is not stable until the ages of roughly 18 to 21. So the IQ at your age is pretty meaningless, though at 130, highly, highly encouraging - look instead at your results, which seem pretty impressive to...- aneesh.mulye

Can anyone recommend a deeper Algebra book beyond Fraleigh?
One of the most beautifully motivated (and rigorous!) books I have ever seen on this topic is "Rings, Fields, and Groups" by Allenby. (It's the text used, IIRC, at Oxford.)- aneesh.mulye

Schools Grad School Advice -- Physics MS or PhD?
I completed my undergraduate degree in Computer Engineering this year in June, and have been working full-time since July. I'll be applying to a number of universities in the USA for an MS in CS, but I don't have any idea, being in India, of which places I should target given my profile. So...- aneesh.mulye

How Does Connecting a Wire Affect Light Bulbs in an Inductive Circuit?
At a first guess, I'd say that nothing will happen. Consider the closed loop consisting of the wire between the two bulbs. The rate of change of magnetic flux within that loop stays the same. Now consider the loop of wire which you have attached, and the closed loop formed by that on the left...- aneesh.mulye

Need a Logic book recommendation.
I'd suggest you get a set of two books: Introduction to Logic (Copi, Cohen) Symbolic Logic (Copi) They should provide a sufficiently good introduction, and the second a nice way to deal with a lot of the material in the grad course. Note, though, that the second book uses slightly...- aneesh.mulye

Re-doing mathematics from the ground up - a rather odd request
First of all, thanks to blerg and the others for their replies. It seems that there are quite a few here who share this desire to "build it up again, foundations-first". Hopefully this thread can be useful to them, too. I think a few clarifications are in order. My fundamentals aren't bad...- aneesh.mulye

Re-doing mathematics from the ground up - a rather odd request
Earlier today, I just took the last examination paper for my examination in my third year in computer engineering. (One more year left to go.) Over the past year, now that I no longer have to do mathematics as a subject forced down my throat - it was a compulsory subject until the end of the...- aneesh.mulye

Can you learn to be good at math or are you just born with it ?
Even if it were 100% after birth, it could still be completely genetically controlled. After all, puberty hits after birth, but it's timing is still decided by genes.- aneesh.mulye

Can you learn to be good at math or are you just born with it ?
A trivial counterexample - could a cow do calculus? If your theory is correct, a cow should be able to, as the difference between humans and cows is only in what is "innate" - the genetic code. Take an example which is less extreme - chimpanzees. We share 98% of our genes with them. Could...- aneesh.mulye

Schools Advice for a Young High School Student (Where did you screw up?)
I don't know about mechanics, but Organic Chemistry I is mandatory, and I think OC II is partially covered in the mandatory part of the HS science curriculum anyway. Kudos to the chap if he took QM, though. The normal HS physics curriculum only goes through a part of the standard...- aneesh.mulye

How do I teach myself undergrad physics?
Thanks for the recommendations! I would appreciate some further comments, however, if you have the time. Currently, my plan goes something like this: Review single-variable calculus, complex algebra, and linear algebra. Also review the basics of mechanics (the Y&F/RHW level) (Two months)...- aneesh.mulye

Overcoming Trouble With School: Advice Needed
I've been through the same situation - it has taken me well over six years to get over it, trying one failing strategy after another, before recognising the wisdom in what I had been taught by my elders - and I can recommend one thing - the bare-knuckle approach. 1) Identify your distractions...- aneesh.mulye
