Who's more well rounded, a physics major or a math major.
I have pondered about this question before. If we only look at the courses that they have to take outside their major at the college undergrad level, a physics major takes a bigger variety of courses. For example at my school, a physics major would have to take the Calculus sequence, the some...- Ash L

Which Class Should I Take: Upper Division ODE or PDE?
Thanks for your input, I've had similar opinion from other people that I have asked. I found a more sophisticated outline of the second half of the PDE course: Separation of variables - review Fourier series - finding the coefficients Full Fourier series Orthogonality, generalized...- Ash L

Undergrad Assigning 5 Grades to 7 People: How Many Possible Combinations?
Similar to what Mentallic has said. The first person can have 5 different choices of grades, and whatever grades that were assigned to the first person will not affect the number of choices available for the second person. So, the second person will also have 5 choices of grades. The third...- Ash L

Which Class Should I Take: Upper Division ODE or PDE?
I'm trying to decide between taking an ODE class or a PDE class next. I have already done Calculus 1,2,3 so I already know some ODEs and PDEs and linear algebra. I'm a 3rd year mathematics major with a minor in Statistics and I'm interested in applied mathematics.ODE course coverage: Ordinary...- Ash L

Deriving the Rate of Change of Angle in a Rocket Launch Using Differentiation
I think the left side of your page should be dθ/dh When t = 5 secs, h = 10(5)^2 = 250m When t = 10 secs, h = 1000m When t = 15 secs, h = 2250m When t = 20 secs, h = 4000m- Ash L

Deriving the Rate of Change of Angle in a Rocket Launch Using Differentiation
Looks okay when my head is turned sideways. If you want to be picky, you could show working out for how you differentiated to get dh/dt. It's not necessary but the grader might deduct points off that, in which I had suffered first hand experience from that.- Ash L

How much water is used when the water falls 1 cm from 100 to 99 cm?
I agree with Steamking and HallsofIvy. Since I can't see the full version of your question, I will try and guess at it. From experience, I think V(h) represents the volume of water at height h. So, V'(h) is the flow rate of water going out. I think you're asked to find the difference in volume...- Ash L

Tossing a die till a number recurs.
I'm a novice here. Wouldn't P(X = 2) = 1/6 * 1/6 = 1/36 ? Since you have to toss 2 times and the result obtained in the second toss has to be the same as the first toss.- Ash L

Ceiling[(2x + 1) / 2)] - ceiling[(2x + 1) / 4] + floor[(2x + 1) / 4]
Homework Statement Show that for any real number x, ceiling[(2x + 1) / 2)] - ceiling[(2x + 1) / 4] + floor[(2x + 1) / 4] always equals to floor(x) or ceiling(x). In what circumstances does each case arise? Homework Equations I know that: floor(x) = largest integer ≤ x ceiling(x) =...- Ash L

Average Times Coin Combination Appears in 10 Letters
Hello, I'm not quite sure if I'm right as I'm still a novice in the world of math. It's been a while since I have taken my prob/stats class. __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ There are 2 ways either C or L for each of the spaces above. So, the total number of ways for spelling out a 10 letter...- Ash L

What are some good study techniques for Calculus?
I'm a freshman in college and thinking of majoring in Math and maybe Chemistry (Don't really know yet, as I've never taken high school Chem). I took Calculus 1 (Differentiation) last quarter and managed to get an A+ (94.79%) for the overall course despite not doing so well on the first midterm...- Ash L

High School How to impress my calculus teacher again
I think you should make up a backup excuse right now so if she decides to ask you about what happened today, you can use it to get out of trouble and not make her angry. Ok, right now the only person standing in your way is the person in the first place of the class. This might sound a bit low... -

Undergrad BS-Mathematics Vs BS-Mathematical Sciences
I have noticed too that they have to take some lower-division math for science degrees except for biology. After those lower-division courses, some people actually think that math is harder than science. Much depends on the person, I think. I don't know why most people can dislike math so much...- Ash L
