What makes a great astrophysicist
making less observations, lesser conjectures, lots of predicitions and making a few more observations which can conclude in one hypothesis. i just made this up but this is a good attribute for an astrophysicist.- balaonspace

High School Write a Speech: "Time Waits for No One" & Cosmology
most of the words in physics have a special meaning. for eg. relativity and uncertainity are words that are wrongly used in physics sense to everyday situations for advocating ones philosophy. same goes for force, momentum, action, reaction, space-time...you get it. In my opinion you can make a...- balaonspace

Undergrad How is the big bang related to the general theory of relativity?
galaxies are massive bodies whose motions are governed by general relativity. there is sufficient evidence to point that galaxies are receding from each other but gravity is an attractive force. if we solve the GR equations backwards in time then space will contract and galaxies/matter will...- balaonspace

Graduate Half Closed Universe: Is It Finite?
Thank you. I get it. Its just my idea that infinity makes no sense in physics. But I don't know how one can check the hypothesis that the universe started infinite.- balaonspace

Graduate Half Closed Universe: Is It Finite?
Are you suggesting that the size of the universe is infinite since dawn. because according to my understanding if big bang created the time and space then at this epoch an accelerate expanding space should be a finite value and cannot be infinite. I might be wrong but i want to be convinced...- balaonspace

Graduate Half Closed Universe: Is It Finite?
You are relating the concept of infinite universe with constant Ωk or k in RW metric. Whatever the value of the constant is it will only tell you the topology of the universe and not the size of the universe. The size will always be finite- balaonspace

The Cosmic Romance of Binary Stars: How Are They Formed?
stars are formed by gases compressing to a critical density and igniting a fusion reaction. binary stars are formed when a large volume of gas partitions during compression into two different stars, they end up as binaries to conserve angular momentum. or drifting stars that are influenced by...- balaonspace

Graduate Half Closed Universe: Is It Finite?
infinity is a nice number for mathematicians but in physics you can put a finite number on everything, big or small, if not then there is a singularity. From current theories we can explain that the universe has a finite size, which can be calculated approximately from speed of light(c) and age...- balaonspace

Stargazing Telescope optical path length vs focal length
http://img828.imageshack.us/img828/5718/phyfor.png In this image 'c' (which i interpret as the optical path distance) and 'f' the focal length can be constrained independently. For example when i design a system with high focal length with optical path, and optimise the same in zemax, the...- balaonspace

Stargazing Telescope optical path length vs focal length
Hi I am trying to design a three mirror off axis telescope. The free parameters are the offset between the apertures and distance between the surfaces. My question is for a system with 'n' elements/surfaces (n=3 in my case) is there a relation between optical path length and focal length...- balaonspace
