Undergrad I'm trying to understand why e works this way
There are proofs in virtually every math textbook that derive that derivative. I just assumed he was okay with the derivative of ln(x) being 1/x. Although you are right. The proof I gave does rely on an understanding of the derivative of ln(x). :) -

Undergrad What is the exact definition of a function?
Lol. I said if you evaluate the "equation" - whatever it may be. I did not say if you evaluate the function. I almost said that in my initial response, though. Ha ha.- binomial

What is the pH of 0.15 M NH4Cl?
I'm still not sure what you're asking. You take the -log(x) once you solve for it to get the pH. If you used the Kb, then you would do 14.00 + log(x) because x in that case would equal the hydroxide concentration, so to get pH you must subtract the pOH from 14.00. -

Undergrad I'm trying to understand why e works this way
Let y = ln(ex) Therefore, \frac{dy}{dx} = \frac{d}{dx}[ex] / ex And since y = ln(ex) = x, dy/dx = 1, and multiplying both sides by ex gives you ex = \frac{d}{dx}[ex] Hope this simple proof helps. -

Undergrad What is the exact definition of a function?
basically if you evaluate the equation and find that it has two of the same x values, then it's not a function. just apply the vertical line test. if that line intersects the curve more than once, it's not a function. pretty much all there is to it.- binomial

What is the pH of 0.15 M NH4Cl?
NH4 has no Kb because it is an acid, not a base. I honestly have no idea what your question is even asking. -

Chemical Equilibrium: Understanding & Equation
Chemical equilibrium is the state of a reaction in which the rate of the forward reaction is equal to the rate of the reverse reaction. For instance, A + B > C. The rate at which A and B are combining to form C is equal to the rate at which C is decomposing into A and B. As Borek said above, the...
