I think you should try leaving the base of the triangle as 1.1t and not replace it with 8 until after you have derived. So you should first get a function of θ(t), then derive and then replace time t with the time that the ladder would be 8 feet from the ground.- blB

Understanding the Rate of Change in Distance Between a Plane and Radar Station
I think finding dtheta/dt would be a roundabout way of doing this problem. You need to draw a triangle with a relation to the altitude, the distance between the plane and the radar station on the ground, and the speed of the plane related to time ( if the plane is going 500m/h then every hour it...- blB
