Infimum of Subsets in R: True or False?
Thanks! Unrelated question : Any advice to someone learning this on his own? I love physics and I know I have to grind through the mathematical details because they matter too but sometimes I get a bit frustrated if I don't immediately get the answer correct.- Bolz

Infimum of Subsets in R: True or False?
So this would fit as a counterexample because you've found the exact same infimum for set A and set B, i.e. 0, and this infimum does not equate to the infimum of their empty intersection?- Bolz

Infimum of Subsets in R: True or False?
Hm, I don't think that last part is possible. Both sets have something in common, i.e. the infimum, which would imply A \cap B is not empty. Is my reasoning correct?- Bolz

Infimum of Subsets in R: True or False?
Homework Statement If a is both the infimum of A\subseteq \mathbb{R} and of B\subseteq \mathbb{R} then a is also the infimum of A\capB Is this statement true or false? If true, prove it. If false, give a counterexample. Homework Equations The Attempt at a Solution I think...- Bolz

Finding delta in terms of epsilon-delta definition
Sorry, you're right. I'm just struggling with a lot in life and I think my lack of self confidence leaked into doing math. Sorry again.- Bolz

Finding delta in terms of epsilon-delta definition
Oh ok. I'm learning this on my own so I assumed it had to be wrong. Self confidence is important in math too apparently.. Anyway, thanks for checking it! :)- Bolz

Finding delta in terms of epsilon-delta definition
Homework Statement If f(x) = 3x+1 en assume δ > 0. Assume ε>0. Give a δ > 0 with the following property : |x-1|< δ => |f(x) - f(1)| < ε Homework Equations The Attempt at a Solution |f(x) - f(1)| < ε <=> |3x+1-(3*1+1)| < ε <=> |3x-3| < ε <=>...- Bolz
