Tenure track position at small University or Postdoc at a top one
Hi guys!, I am in a kind of dilemma and wanted to know your opinion. I am from a very small european country and came to US for a PhD in a respectable university (top 50 in all world rankings). I just finished my PhD in mathematical modeling of turbulent flows and applied for different...- Bunsen

What does it take to get into a top 100 college for a master's in physics?
This is not true. I could not find information about other german universities in the world top 100, but I think LMU Munich and TU Munich are at least as selective as Heidelberg is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heidelberg_University "In the winter-semester 2006/2007, the university...- Bunsen

Schools PhD in Germany (Names of Universities)
I do not think that Germany is bad at all. Of course, at the beginning of last century it was the center of the world, but due to the current concurrence, it is difficult to any country to have such an incredible dominant position. I think that the fact that we do not see german universities...- Bunsen

Schools PhD in Germany (Names of Universities)
What I know about Germany, is that, as a whole, there are three Universities which are consistently ranked at the top of German universities (and top 20 Europe): LMU Munich, TU Munich and Heidelberg. The order depends on the specific ranking. I do not really know about all the areas of...- Bunsen

Is computational physics a PhD area of study?
It is computational physics xD... However, if you really want to classify it as either experimental or theoretical physics, I would say it depends on what you actually do... If you are just running a code and focussing in the analysis of the results, than it is more experimental. But if you...- Bunsen

Is it difficult for engineers to switch to mathematical fluid dynamics research?
Hi guys, I studied mechanical engineering and I am currently a graduate student (turbulence modeling). I am interested in the more formal/mathematical aspects of fluid dynamics, which are mainly worked in mathematical faculties and I would like to know if someone knows/have an idea about...- Bunsen

Losing ability of solving problems.
Hi guys! Well, when I was a B.Sc and/or a M.Sc student I used to solve lots of exercises from books in order to prepare myself for exams. I was really familiar with many methods for solving ODE and PDE by hand and I was comfortable by doing it. But since 3 years I am only working in research...- Bunsen

Engineering Researchers in fluid mechanics: engineers , Physicists ?
You are always talking about applications and people who want to learn physics/mathematics for using it in those applications and yes, these persons are engineer from any point of view. But, again, I am not talking about them. I am talking about people developing numerical methods and...- Bunsen

Engineering Researchers in fluid mechanics: engineers , Physicists ?
I think you are who has a misconception. You are talking about people using models in order: "to know, in exquisite detail, what happens to a spacecraft " or "to know, in exquisite detail, how a rocket works". And yes, they are engineers. But I am talking about someone doing things like...- Bunsen

Engineering Researchers in fluid mechanics: engineers , Physicists ?
I suspect you did not get the point of what I am asking. I am not saying that engineers are stupid or that they do not use science and mathematics. I am saying that, at least for me, an engineer is someone who is doing engineering (or at least has done it in some point of his life) and in...- Bunsen

Engineering Researchers in fluid mechanics: engineers , Physicists ?
Researchers in fluid mechanics: "engineers", "Physicists" ? Dear all, I was reading the book "Turbulent flows" of S. Pope and I went to his website at Cornell and started to see his work. In case you do not know him, I can tell you that his work is 100% applied mathematics and fluid physics...- Bunsen

From turbulent flows to astrophysic
Hi! I would like to know your opinion about an eventual jump from a PhD in mathematical modeling of turbulent flows to a postdoc in astrophysics? Do you think something like this is possible? or the only option is to do a second PhD? Thanks in advance for your answers =).- Bunsen
