Graduate Conservation of angular momentum in nuclear physics
Say a uranium-238 nucleus with angular momentum II decays to thorium-234 plus an alpha particle. Will the sum of the angular momenta of the thorium-234 nucleus and the alpha particle equal II? What if a photon was emitted during this process, would Ithorium+Iα+hbar=II? thanks- burgjeff

Graduate Orbital quantum number in the shell model
Why isn't the Orbital angular momentum quantum number in the nuclear shell model restricted by the principal quantum number like it is in the atomic shell model? Also, does the principal quantum number even correspond to energy in the shell model?- burgjeff

Graduate Why is the induced M field proportional to H, instead of the B field?
Thanks for the responses guys. After reading them, my understanding is that the M field is defined this way conventionally because it is more convenient. This is allowed because, by rearranging the equation M=X_{m}H in order to solve for M, one gets: M=\frac{X_{m}}{X_{m}+1} \frac{B}{u_{0}}...- burgjeff

Graduate Why is the induced M field proportional to H, instead of the B field?
The M field is the density of induced or permanent magnetic dipole moments. It is analogous to the P field in electrostatics.
