    Bosuns Chair acceleration problem

So the tension in each of the ropes, as there is 2, would be 100N. Would that therefore mean the unbalanced force would be 686.7-200= 486.7N?

    Bosuns Chair acceleration problem

I've tried that. The weight of the operator and his chair 686.7N meaning that the Tension in the two ropes holding him up should be 343.35N. Correct?

    Bosuns Chair acceleration problem

Homework Statement A boatswain's chair (or bosun's chair) is a device which is used to suspend a person from a rope to perform work aloft. It has a rigid seat and can be rigged, as shown in Fig.1, to allow the operator to haul himself upwards. [Naturally, in practice, it is wise to ensure that...

    Finding the maximum of S=8x²ln(1/2x)

Original Question: A communications cable has a copper core with a concentric sheath of insulating material. If x is the ratio of the radius of the core to the thickness of the insulating sheath, the speed of a signal along the cable is given by: S=8x2ln(\frac{1}{2x}) Find the value of...

    Finding the maximum of S=8x²ln(1/2x)

I think I could have the answer if someone just helps me find x from: (x+ ln(1/2x))=0

    Finding the maximum of S=8x²ln(1/2x)

I don't believe I have a problem with basic differentiation as I have studied it for well over a year and have been fine with it, however I am definitely not an expert. Where about do you believe the problem lies?

    Finding the maximum of S=8x²ln(1/2x)

Confused  can someone write out the correct solution?

    Finding the maximum of S=8x²ln(1/2x)

    I was using the product rule: \frac{d}{dX}(fg)=f^{|}g+fg^{|}

    Finding the maximum of S=8x²ln(1/2x)

    I'll take you through my working: \frac{dS}{dx}=16x3+16xln(1/2x) 16x3+16xln(1/2x)=0. For maximum 16x(x2+ln(1/2x))=0 X2+ln(1/2x)=0

    Finding the maximum of S=8x²ln(1/2x)

S=8x2ln(1/2x) Find the value of x that gives a maximum. So far I have got, by differentiating: x2+ln(1/2x). [could be wrong] Btw the way in the question x is a ratio and so cannot equal zero. Please help and explain how to do it thanks :)

How can I learn more advanced physics?

Thanks I've starting watching some Leonard Suskind lectures on gravity and they're really quite interesting!

How can I learn more advanced physics?

Yeah I will definitely focus on my exams they are only in a few weeks, I think I need to get 4 A's to get into uni for it :/ pretty nervous atm

How can I learn more advanced physics?

By the way I'm away to go into my lasts year at school. I understand Electronics, properties of matter and Newtonian physics quite well :) I'm hoping to do physics at uni

Undergrad Is the Einstein equation E=Mc^2 correct?

I worked out it should produce about 4.68x1018 J. That's obviously a theoretical value but how much it really produced I don't know. Anyone know what that kind of energy would do?
