Collision Damage Comparison: 40mph Head-On vs. 80mph vs. Rest

Conservation of momentum / energy. In an ideal situation the scenarios will give the same result as long as the stationary car isn't fixed to the spot. (Air track experiment.) If you are to include crumple zones and other real model considerations I think the 80mph colision will come off...

Amorphous ice is less dense than crystalline, why?

True, but that doesn't exclude the possibility of amorphous ice having a lower density up until it is compressed. :D How much can crystalline ice be compressed before it loses its structure?

Physics' challenges for the 21st century

I think the greatest challenge for any scientist (so, not just physicists) of the future is ethics (or getting around them.) We live in a Post Modernist world quickly becoming post- Post Modernist what ever that means...

Can Chromatic Aberration Create Gravitational Fields?

Does the average beam of light have mass? It has momentum... I'd imagine that there would be very strange gravitational phenomena if it is so.

Amorphous ice is less dense than crystalline, why?

I would have thought that amorphous (having no crystalline structure) has a larger opportunity for trapping air, whereas crystalline being geometric contains a fixed amount. ie, the crystalline ice traps air between the intermolecular (H) bonds, and as such has a fixed density, while...

    MacKichan Scientific Notebook: Forcing Math/Text

Hey crew, Playing around with the aforementioned software and I am finding myself becoming agitated that I am continually having to switch between Text and Math. Hit enter, and its back to Text. What I want to do is make it Math always until I decide to toggle. Not sure if this is...
