B Car Crash Physics: Deceleration Calculations

Straightforward numerical error in the original post - 16 cm is 0.16 m, not 0.016. So the deceleration provided by the seat belt is a more survivable 15.9 g. The crash is over well before the seat belt finishes its job.

A Formula for force between two sheets of aluminum foil under voltage

All good stuff. Just pointing out: The electrons in the conductors are strongly attracted towards or repelled away from the inner surface, so there is is zero field within the bulk of the plates. As the voltage is raised, electrons start escaping through breakdown of the air or dielectric, or by...

A Formula for force between two sheets of aluminum foil under voltage

I just did some work on this for a client. With part film, part air in the gap (eg Duffin - Electricity and Magnetism): The system could be modelled as a parallel plate capacitor with the gap x between conducting surfaces, area A, partly filled by dielectric, thickness t and dielectric constant...

Exploring Web Handling: A Physicist's Perspective

I am semi-retired after 22 years consulting on plastic film production and properties, and web handling for any thin continuous sheet. Prior to that I worked in that field for a major UK chemical company. I am still interested in understanding web handling better with the aid of theory. I am...

Solving the Rewinding Tension Control Puzzle: A Production Engineer's Story

I just came across your query in a search today. David Roisum, Tim Walker and I recently wrote The Web Handling Handbook, which is probably the most comprehensive book around. You can buy a copy at most big online booksellers, amazon, google etc and also from DesTech, the publishers, at...
