Your opinion as to what homolgy is

I think it is better to use phrases such as "The sequences are x% identical indicating that they are homologous", alternatively "x% similar under y scoring scheme". In undergraduate courses at my university the professors are very keen to stress that it is not sensible to talk about degrees of...

Have we ever observe significant macro evolutionary changes

It has very recently been published an interesting computational study attempting to quantifiably address how common burst-speciation happens relative to more gradual accumulation of minor changes: Phylogenies reveal new interpretation of speciation and the Red Queen Chris Venditti, Andrew...

Have we ever observe significant macro evolutionary changes

I think one of the ways new functionality can occur through evolution is by parts of the genome being duplicated, so that certain proteins are coded for redundantly. One of these codes are then free to change so much that it no longer performs its original function. This can then again from the...

Have we ever observe significant macro evolutionary changes

It turns out it is not. And I am not really surprised. If you consider the large amount of functions that has to be gained and lost for two species to be classified into different genus and the short time that we have been developing evolutionary theory (150 yrs). For the kinds of species we can...

I see. sorry. In hindsight I see that it was perfectly explained all along.

    Rounding numbers in microsoft excel

Your example seems to be flawed. Shouldn't 0.566~0.56 , according to your specification?

Have we ever observe significant macro evolutionary changes

If what you are looking for is evolution happening within a controlled experiment, the closest you'll get is probably controlled evolution of e.coli strains (http://myxo.css.msu.edu/ecoli/). I expect these experiments to show fairly dramatic changes, but probably not qualifying for new genus...

Google Wave Invite: Experience & Description

It has some interesting features. I like that one can instantaneously switch between chatting live and asynchronous messaging. I also like the gadgets, I can write equations in wave-messages using latex, something which is always a pain when writing e-mail. I've got more invites than I need at...

Sickle Cell Anemia: Secondary & Tertiary Structure Change?

If you are getting examined in this I would be a little bit elaborate :-). In general changes at a low structural level propagate upwards (so that the higher levels also are changed), but not necessarily much. Some structures are very sensitive to certain single-residue substitutions, while...

Sickle Cell Anemia: Secondary & Tertiary Structure Change?

This page: http://www.umass.edu/microbio/chime/hemoglob/2frmcont.htm seems to have a vizualisation of both structures, but I could not open it my browser. I did try to compare the pdb structures of both healthy and sick Hb (4HHB and 2HBS) and to me it does not look like the secondary and...
