News Decline and fall of the Nobel Peace Prize
Thirdly, as a Swede, I am deeply worried about the populistic manner in which the Norwegian committee is handing out the peace prize. Ok, this is not as bad as in 2007 and, especially, 1994 (!), but seriously, this threatens to spill over and damage the reputations of the "true" prizes. I...- EL

US Airways Flt 1549 Crashed in Hudson River
Most passengers seem to be very thankful to the pilot, and God! I guess they give credit to the second guy for the rollercoster ride, or what?- EL

Olympic Opening Parade of Nations
That's true, the histories are completely different. Well, given any single country I guess most people have no reason to go there either. But don't mix up imigration with racial diversity. Actually quite many people have a reason to go to e.g. Sweden. In total about 1,2 million (first...- EL

Having children in US, how does it work?
Well, I was more thinking of the father staying home an additional 6 weeks after the mother had used her's. But maybe the 6 weeks usually need to be used directly after the birth, or? Ok, I better get used to the idea then. Btw, what is the "typical" cost of day care? (I mean, I have no idea...- EL

Having children in US, how does it work?
Thanks Evo, hope your arm is better! I guess that only includes the mothers, or does that father usually get an additional 6 weeks? Do people really put their children in day care when they are just 6 weeks old? I think that would feel a bit strange. I understand there are no firm answers...- EL

Having children in US, how does it work?
My girlfriend and I have started thinking of the possibility of moving to US (probably New York city) after finishing our PhDs, which should happen in about two years. We are then in the age when it is time to start reproducing, and this is indeed a major concern I am having about our plans. Not...- EL

Is Michael Dine a Renowned Figure in the String Theory Community?
I think he is rather known within the string community. I have heard his name a few times, through some of my more "stringy" colleagues and because of a course in supersymmetry.- EL

Graduate What is the typical efficiency of a muon detector at an accelerator experiment?
Thanks, I think I've got a pretty good grasp of the situation now. Actually I was handed a MC simulation of muon detection efficiency today, so I will try to use that.- EL

News The Netherlands and the EU - A Worthwhile Investment in Peace and Stability
I thought the dollar mainly declined due to the subprime crisis. Is there a connection between that and competition from the EU? As an example, Sweden is not members of EMU (but only of EU) and our currency has mainly followed the Euro during the dollar decline.- EL
