Programs Debt vs. Longer time to get degree
The whole time you are saving to buy a house outright, your money spent on rent is going nowhere versus taking out a loan (while rates are insanely low right now) and making mortgage payments which would be giving you equity in something.- elterrible

AP vs. IB: Advice from High Schoolers on Benefits & Admissions
The IB and AP classes will be harder than the first year college classes. Its not a matter of community college being difficult but it will be hard going to school all day and then trying to go to a night class on top of that and still do all of your homework for regular school. Plus you will be...- elterrible

AP vs. IB: Advice from High Schoolers on Benefits & Admissions
I did AP classes at a special math/science/computer school. Took I think 5 total AP classes. It was one of the top high schools in the country. Applied to 3 state schools and of course got accepted to all, went to the one that offered the most scholarship money. One didnt offer any at all. I...- elterrible

High School Mysterious Glass Shatter: What Caused It?
I never seen glass spontaneously shatter, but thinking about it I have seen a ceramic bowl and a ceramic plate shatter. With glass, the fact that it flows downward at a very very slow rate, certainly has some effect and would influence accumulated stresses, it isn't required or the sole...- elterrible

High School Mysterious Glass Shatter: What Caused It?
Old thread, but I am calling dibs on the guitar doing it. Amps can get pretty loud, that creates a pressure wave. The glass could have had micro cracks that weren't visible and the sound pressure could be the straw that broke the camels back. If you could hear the guitar in the bathroom which...- elterrible

Why would glass shatter spontaneously?
hmm, this seems a really good explanation. Plus its tensile strength will be a lot lower than its compressive strength. So even though its just setting on the counter, it still can have a lot of built up tensile stresses and just a few more thermal cycles to send it over the edge.- elterrible

Other Becoming an Engineer: Considerations and Personal Experiences
I knew one guy who did a double in mechanical and electrical actually. I don't think I would personally recommend it because a lot of companies would be looking for one or the other and having both wouldn't benefit you as much as doing a BS+MS in one. He basically did one whole degree and then...- elterrible

Schools How should I handle my university dropping me from a crucial course?
Talk to them to see if they can squeeze you into one of the other classes that are full, explain your situation and that you can loose your GI bill if you don't finish your degree in time. Our academic adviser also taught a few of the basic classes which were prereqs for everything else in the...- elterrible

PE vs MS vs PhD: Which Should I Do First in US?
A PE license is real important in civil engineering but a lot less so with other disciplines. Still it is never a bad thing to get the license, it can only help. The american society of civil engineers (ASCE) has been pushing to make it a requirement to have a masters degree to take the PE...- elterrible

Choosing Between Engineering and Physics: Making the Right Career Move at 17
I say option A but I am pretty biased towards engineering. I second the other guy who said your plans may change in the future. 17 is very young and trying to plan out the next 10 years of your life at that age is a lot to do so things may turn out different. Ive changed my mind from...- elterrible

Does Living Near Fast Food Increase Your Risk of Stroke?
"esearchers studying neighborhoods in one Texas county found that people living in regions with 33 fast food restaurants or more had 13 percent greater odds of stroke than those living in neighborhoods with the fewest fast-food joints. " I don't know though, who doesn't live close to...- elterrible

Half of Cambridge students cheat. Still a Top 10 university?
The evaluations are a bit of a joke here. The instructor is not allowed to be in the room when we do them, so a student has to volunteer to collect them and turn them in the office. The instructor passes them out at the end of class (usually end the class a few minutes early) but then people...- elterrible

Students who cheat in introductory physics courses
One of my professors requires everyone to leave their backpacks and all notes at the front of the room. Another only allowed us to use the scientific calculators and not the graphing ones which notes can be stored. I cheated like crazy my first 2 years of high school, it was a nerdy special...- elterrible

Schools How to prep for University Mathematics
Yeah its comparable. In high school you are doing a year, which is two semesters. AP AB does 1 semester of Calc, AP BC is equivalent to Calc I and Calc II. I had done Chemistry AP in high school and then college level Chemistry and the AP class was actually far more challenging. The Chem in...- elterrible
