Graduate Energy/Mass transitioning from finite to infinite amounts
hypothetically speaking - if a spaceship was to accelerate to 99.9% the speed of light, then turned off it's engines so it wasn't accelerating anymore but still traveling at 99.9% the speed of light and then a spaceman with a jet pack left the spaceship and accelerated away could he or she...- flinky

Graduate Energy/Mass transitioning from finite to infinite amounts
looking at the link and the graph mathman posted. what would be the most likely realistic speed a spaceship could reach? looking at the graph it looks to me it is either going to be 0.5 the speed of light or around 0.8 to 0.9.- flinky

Undergrad Quick Question about the Doppler Effect
dunno dunno ah! to get bigger yeah I get this, but looking at the two slit experiment hypothetically speaking the wave propagates through the slit towards the wall and hits the wall at two separate points at exactly the same time, interacting in two different places at exactly the same...- flinky

Undergrad Quick Question about the Doppler Effect
if photons lose energy when redshifted due to the expansion of space, then space must gain the energy so why isn't this a candidate for dark energy, or is it? and a little off topic but curious - when light (a single photon) leaves a distance star it behaves like a wave so does that mean it...- flinky

Undergrad A basic question on gravity from a novice
thanks for the replies. things are a bit clearer now, although a lot of other questions have popped up. but I'm going to re-read a couple of things first to see if i understand them better first. I did think that everything was very precise in physics, so realising that things are more...- flinky

Undergrad A basic question on gravity from a novice
thanks for the quick replies and much appreciated. the first part about size and mass was really just getting confirmation of what I thought. it is still bizarre to me that size is irrelevant in this context. phinds: first, thanks for replying. the black holes being a problem thing, what I...- flinky

Undergrad A basic question on gravity from a novice
First let me apologise if this is a dumb question, or it has been asked before but i can't find an answer anywhere. I am a bit puzzled by some aspects of gravity. I'm also a novice so the question is in simple language and may not be clear, i hope it is. it's also a two-part question. Finally as...- flinky
