Undergrad Does a Capacitor Create an Electric Field Between its Wire and Ground?
Good, so the capacitance between the wires in this case would be very small right? And the E-fied would exist between the plate capacitor (mainly). So an electron in between ground and the exposed wire does not really feel much force. Does this sound reasonable?- gareth

Undergrad Does a Capacitor Create an Electric Field Between its Wire and Ground?
Thats what I thought, but I'm not clear as to the charge distribution on the wires. The electric field (induced by the potential of the battery), exists in the dielectric between the capacitor (plate capacitor). The electrons arrange themselves on either plate to set up this field. Where do...- gareth

Undergrad Does a Capacitor Create an Electric Field Between its Wire and Ground?
Hi guys, This has bugged me for a while, if we have a battery (+ve) connected to one side of capacitor, and negative connected to ground. We are left with a wire coming from the other side of the capacitor. Is there a potential, and hence an electric field, between the wire and ground...- gareth

LaTeX Get the Perfect .bst Files for APL Submission: Expert Tips and Tools
Thanks for the help, are you doing the \bibitems by hand? In the mean time I have a temporary fix, I use a package (rextex4) that gives me similar bibliographic style (exactly the same, the latex example tex file, its called something like assamp.tex) as APL. Then all I do is make the...- gareth

LaTeX Get the Perfect .bst Files for APL Submission: Expert Tips and Tools
Why, not at all! Do JAP supply a template for the paper, or bibliography? I'm curious to know how you're going to put together the bibliography, I have not used the \begin{thebibliography} method before. I'm going to guess the styles are pretty similar for both journals (AIP), so if you...- gareth

LaTeX Get the Perfect .bst Files for APL Submission: Expert Tips and Tools
Thanks for the help f95toli, the general consensus from online posts is that it's an awkward submission process. I am using the PRL .bst file to get a feel for the length, however, they do say they require the referencing to be done in the correct format. However, they don't want your .bbl...- gareth

LaTeX Get the Perfect .bst Files for APL Submission: Expert Tips and Tools
Hi all, Had a GOOD look around for a .sty or .bst files for submission of a LateX article to Applied Physics Letters. There have been a few posts elsewhere with no joy, but they are dated now. Has anyone got a resonable match for this journal? Or can anyone giude me as to how to go...- gareth

Graduate Explaining the O'Hare Airport UFO (day events)
Ok, now I have some serious problems with the physics. You claim this 'ball' of hot gas is contained by some sort of 'geometrical' phenomena, please elaborate. Any gas in the atmosphere will mix with any other gas to obtain a uniform concentration. That's why farts don't stick around forever...- gareth

Graduate Explaining the O'Hare Airport UFO (day events)
Hmmm, I'm having trouble with that. Would airline pilots possibly have seen exhaust gasses before? If so, would several of them have reported this incident as something out of the ordinary?- gareth

Is there life in the universe, and if so has it visited Earth?
I would have to say there is intelligent life out there. I'm on the fence on whether they've paid a visit or not, but I would tipping slightly to the 'they have' side of the fence.- gareth

Is there life in the universe, and if so has it visited Earth?
Did you draw it to anyone else's attention? I've read a few UFO witness reports, it's another reccuring aspect of the sightings (along with reccuring sightings over the course of their lives), that only the reporting witness could see the object. I'm not saying the people are delusional...- gareth

Is there life in the universe, and if so has it visited Earth?
looks like one of those socket wrench thingies. It looks fairly big from the image, seems like it could be the size of a light aircraft but can't say for sure. If it is that size and it is moving, it's going to have to move pretty quick to get out of that valley. It doesn't look like it's...- gareth

Could you go into one of other sightings? Maybe not all of them, but another noteworthy one. Personally, what was you're gut feeling when you saw them?- gareth
