Fukushima Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster discussions

Fukushima Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster discussions

Tepco's site says I'm also wondering about the necessity to pump water into the sites. Presumably now, after some 13 years, any fuel/concrete mass has now solidified, and is stable, and decay heat should be sufficiently low to prevent anything unexpected from happening, but maybe not?

Tritium concentration at Fukushima Water Treatment Facility

Its been a while since I waded into rabbit hole of data coming from Tepco, but from what I can gather, the difference is the location of the two sources of the water containing tritium. In the presentation from 2014 (the page 16 to which was previously linked), the water with 67000bq/liter is...

Fukushima Japan Earthquake: nuclear plants Fukushima part 2

Tokyo newspaper Tokyo Shinbun reporting today that the plan to remove spent fuel rods from Units 1 and 2 of Fukushima Dai-ichi has been pushed back 3 years, and is now expected to start in 2023. The reason given is the high radiation readings around the area where the work is required to take...

This is incorrect. They merely suspect there is a hole in the torus, which is prohibiting them from filling it up with water. They do not speculate that fuel caused the hole (at least, not in this video). The red mark is just a graphical representation of the hole, not of fuel.

According to this article, the activity of tritium in the Fukushima water is less than 60k becquerels per liter. http://www.labornetjp.org/EventItem/1499136119185matuzawa

Fukushima Japan earthquake - contamination & consequences outside Fukushima NPP

I'm interested in this too. My guess is that the values being measured lately are so negligible, the minuscule variances will be the result of the uneven concentrations to begin with. The initial dispersal was uneven, and the environment where these measurements are now being taken (the...

Would there still be Cherenkov radiation after 6 years and considering all the impurities in the melt and the deformed geometry, etc...?

I hope this isn't seen as splitting hairs, but I think the above requires some qualification. The Navy authorized voluntary evacuations of dependents. http://www.stripes.com/news/pacific/military-begins-voluntary-evacuation-of-families-in-japan-1.137999

Another burst of video from Fukushima. This one appeared on CNN complete with lurid headline (which they have since toned down) http://edition.cnn.com/videos/world/2015/04/20/vos-fukushima-nuclear-plant.tepco

Fukushima Japan Earthquake: nuclear plants Fukushima part 2

Video from the robot inspection of Unit #1 is up on YouTube. (Video is from a Japanese news program. Feel free to remove if it is against forum rules). The still photos are also getting a lot of attention from the papers as well. They say the robot encountered radiation of between 7 and 9.7...

Fukushima Japan earthquake - contamination & consequences outside Fukushima NPP

Since I'm in a confessional mood, I guess I should also admit I don't really understand how the various isotopes of cesium are produced: is it correct to say that Cesium 135 is the decay/daughter product of Xe135 (which itself is a fission product of U235), and that Cesium 137 and 134 are the...

Fukushima Japan earthquake - contamination & consequences outside Fukushima NPP

I'm trying to understand a bit more about fission products of Fukushima Daiichi, their distribution as a result of the accident, etc. Specifically, I'm struggling to understand the details of Cesium 137 and Cesium 135. The ANL Human Health Fact Sheet regarding Cesium (October 2001) mentions...
