    I got a B+ and I am freaking out.

capandbells, I don't mean to be insensitive, but what is the purpose of this topic? Do you want us to swarm in here and tell you that everything is going to be okay? It seems a little juvenile doesn't it? Look, I'm inclined to say that this B+ is going to matter very little in the grand scheme...

    Astrophysicist - destined for academia?

Basically, most research jobs are going to be in academia. For most, a job in academia is something of a dream job. The market is very low compared to the number of PhD's so if you could even get a job in academia, it would be an achievement.

    Astrophysicist - destined for academia?

This is so sad... I'll leave the explanation to someone else, as I have class in 10 minutes.

Should we be equally tolerant of all ethical and moral precepts?

Man, there really is no need for you to jump to the conclusion that I'm some religious fanatic. I'm not going to delve into the intricacies of my personal philosophy or religious beliefs, or lack thereof, but I will say that I'm most definitely not trying to say that since we can't get morals...

Should we be equally tolerant of all ethical and moral precepts?

Alright, first off, as apeiron mentioned before, in order for any reason or logic to be applied to any morals, we need to start with a fundamental axiom of ethics. But to say that this axiom should be to maximize joy or happiness is as completely arbitrary as to say it should be to honor god or...

Starting the Path to becoming a Theoretical/Astrophysicist from Middle School

Alright, let's agree to disagree. I'm not trying to discourage you or anything. All I'm saying is, you're young, and you have plenty of time to learn about different jobs and figure out what you want to do. You may love physics now, but maybe that's just because you haven't learned enough about...

Starting the Path to becoming a Theoretical/Astrophysicist from Middle School

Well yes, in general the media tends to portray the sciences as boring from the external point of view. But from the internal point of view, through science television shows and popular books, it tends to glamorize it. I would venture to say that most, if not all, of your exposure to theoretical...

Starting the Path to becoming a Theoretical/Astrophysicist from Middle School

Alright, I'm not being mean or anything, but I seriously doubt you understand the fields of theoretical physics and astrophysics enough to know "for sure" that you are going to go into either of them. And I'm not singling you out, or saying you're stupid or anything. I think it's great that...

Read Zapper's Thread, Still Have Questions

As some people have said before, taking multivariable calculus might be useful. It'll also help keep calculus fresh in her mind before college. She more than likely would still have to take in college though, so it wouldn't really push her ahead. It will keep her busy though, and she'd be...

Schools Advice for a first year high schooler who wishes to be a theoretical physicist

Chances are that at your age, you perception of every single branch of science is at least a little skewed, including physics. Keep an open mind and don't get stuck onto this idea of theoretical physics. In case you didn't know, there are two types of physics, theoretical and experimental. The...

Programs Choosing a Major: Physics, Mathematics, or Engineering?

Okay, I think that it's way too early for you to decide what you want to major in. Chances are that you have a skewed perception of what theoretical physics and pure math are. As a sophomore, I was definitely into the whole idea of theoretical physics, but I don't think I really understood what...

Undergraduate Research: How to Get Started in Theoretical Physics

Definitely ask your physics professors if they know of any research opportunities. It's the most direct and reliable way of finding out what there is. But I definitely think that being able to work with a theoretical physicist would be fairly challenging. But, as I always find myself say, why is...

Is this program suitable for me?

Yeah, actually at first I only briefly skimmed over it. Most of those classes probably would be helpful in some way. How many more electives do you have with that program?

Is this program suitable for me?

I would say that if your career goals are for something that's in between physics and chemistry, a chemistry degree might be a little excessive. It seems like a lot of the chemistry courses are catered more towards people going into biological sciences and chemical engineering. I think that if...

Do Undergrad Early Graduates Get Into Top Programs?

Alright first off, please, don't do anything because of what your parents pull a guilt trip on you. Consider what they have to say, but don't model your life around what they want for you. Secondly, I can half agree, and say that the correlation between top grad programs and jobs is high...
