Thank you. That makes more sense.
So, in theory, would it be possible to have a different universe with the same physical laws but containing vastly more matter/energy ? Say with ten times the matter/energy density of our Universe ?
I'm not asking if life would be possible, just if such a...
Sure, I had no idea btw that this was some sort of point of debate when I asked the question ( I am not any sort of physicist, it just seemed like a reasonable question from an observers point of view).
Here is an article on some research which seems to cast doubt on the invariability of...
True, but then if Alpha does vary (which seems to be in doubt at the moment) then the standard answers given are pretty moot in the first place aren't they ?
How hard is it to say 'we don't actually know for sure' or 'it's under investigation' ?
And why do people get so worked up about it...
Thanks, I kinda understand what you're saying.
But I'm still puzzled. Is it true that our 'laws' are intrinsically linked to the physical properties of what we call 'space-time' ?
So if you 'fast forward' the universe another 14 billion odd years to a point where (presumably) it will be...
...why aren't the laws of physics changing ?
Gravity for example works on a formula dealing with the inverse square of distances. If those distances are changing, why isn't the law of gravity changing ? Or indeed everything.
Anybody have a simple answer ? Ta.
Thanks, I see what you mean. I shall ponder some more. I just thought it would be a neat solution for dark matter, dark energy, wave/particle self interference etc? I mean, if there really were multiple 'invisible particles/waves' from other dimentions that interacted in certain ways with the...
I believe the dual slit experiment proves that single photons and even buckyballs have to interfere with something right ? Even if it's only themselves ? So is it possible that they could be interfering with coppies of themselves from other dimensions ? Maybe 20 of them, as proposed by string...
Hmm, either I've stumped you guys, or my question really IS stupid. But it's a shame either way because I believe Kinetic energy may hold the key to some mysteries.
Thing is, everything we know about kinetics, motion etc is from Newton right ? But if you play with a Newton cradle here on...
Anybody ? I can find plenty of estimates of the breakdown of all other forms of energy in the Universe, but not one that mentions kinetic energy. Does anybody know of one ?
How does the standard model reflect inertial energy ?
The following puzzles me-
I am reliably informed that the entire milky way is moving through space towards a nearby galaxy cluster at a heady speed of 1000 Klm per second. I assume this scenario is repeated all across the Universe with...
Hmm I'm not so sure, the first indications from the MAGIC telescope are that 'the fabric of space-time is not silky smooth as Einstein and many others have presumed, but rough, turbulent and fundamentally grainy stuff'.
If this turns out to be true then it brings us back to the OP's question...
So if space does indeed act like a prisim or lens for electromagnetic radiation, bending it this way and that, what absolute proof do we have that the redshift we see is NOT caused by that process?
Do we actually have concrete proof that the Universe is expanding?
Or is it based on the...
