What Are the Most Common Stereotypes of Physicists?

Please take below as a light-hearted topic suitable for the lounge area, I most certainly do not wish that it gets out of hand. Part I How often do you encounter people harbouring various stereotypes of physicists, either good or bad? Is there often a discrepancy between what people think you...

B Does the brain use quantum mechanics?

Wouldn't it depend on how small the brain is... [emoji848]

@Demystifier Would you consider this a "bible": Mathematical Physics - Sadri Hassani I won't pretend I read it all, I self-studied maybe quarter or third of it at best during summer (it was great fun). It seems to have high reputation on PF as a graduate level text on the matter.

Anyone familiar with this Mathematica textbook?

If I can be forgiven for resurrecting this, great news! Third edition got released just a month ago: Schaum's Outline of Mathematica Considering how cheap SO books are, I'll definitely be getting a copy while it's "fresh".

Physics Physicists and physics majors, was it worth it?

I am not from the US, so I am unable to comment on US health care system. One of my American acquaintances once summarised it If you're not rich, you're f****d. Hopefully it's not as bad as that. Doesn't university pay for it though? I thought universities pay for health insurance when they...

Physics Physicists and physics majors, was it worth it?

With physics degree, you can do much better than Burger King, I can tell you that much. You just need a game plan; you need to demonstrate that you understand the issues their business is facing, and explain how you would handle such issues, or why you are the right guy for the job. Here is an...

Programs Are English-Taught MSc Physics Programs Available in France?

I have my eyes on this one: Msc High Energy Physics. It is jointly organised by École Polytechnique (ParisTech) and ETH Zurich (Switzerland). You spend 1 year in Switzerland, 1 year in France, from what I understand. Check out their website for more.

Physics Physicists and physics majors, was it worth it?

I am a 30 year old man, with geophysics background. During my undergraduate studies, I have mainly supported myself by working casually as a tutor for my university. The fact that I graduated allowed me to get hired by my university to teach a physics class at sub-bachelor level (think high...

Physics Job resources for academic positions in nano-optics and applied electrodynamics

For Australia, SEEK is quite popular. I couldn't find much under Education with "nano" in it, but keep an eye on it from time to time.

Why not make this thread "sticky"? I spent a fare amount of searching and googling before I discovered Jackson and Sakurai, which are already listed on the first page here. Other students may not need to.

"Classical Physics Is Wrong" Fallacy - Comments

I am amazed and puzzled by the amount of discussion triggered by this article, not even remotely controversial. I'd say the message of the article was pretty clear, so using all this sophistry to rip the article apart acts only to discourage the author from ever again publishing anything us...

I Shape of the universe, and a few other questions....

Hello everyone, I don't normally come to Astro/Cosmo forums, but I stumbled upon a discussion between a mentor and a PF member here, which involved explanations on the geometry of the universe: difference between boundless vs unlimited, 2-torus vs 3-torus, why are tori boundless, etc. This got...

Job Selection Criteria: Money versus Happiness

As someone who turned 30 about three weeks ago, I cannot agree more with this statement. @Suyash Singh I was born and raised in a small, poor country in Europe, and I would like to say I understand how you feel - when looking around, seeing no jobs, depression and economic stagnation...

Physics Is a career in string theory worth pursuing without experimental proof?

Hi there! I know very little about string theory, but how do you know what variables are used in equations? And what does any of this have to do with your eyesight? I'm struggling to understand your question (and I suspect others might also). You mean, your future career? What prof Hawking...
