2012 Physics and Astronomy REU Programs
Apparently UC Davis had 550 applicants and LIGO (Caltech) had 1600. I got an offer from University of Michigan, so I'll probably take it. Anyone else going there?- I_wonder_why

2012 Physics and Astronomy REU Programs
I applied to the Columbia Nevis REU last year and got a phone interview but didn't get the job. The interviewer said it was down to me and one other person, who I can only assume was a better interviewee than I. Just letting you know there may be an interview involved. Best of luck!- I_wonder_why

Undergrad What causes the centripetal acceleration of the earth?
"in an inertial frame, you can say that the normal force from the Earth must be less than gravity by a value equal to the mass times the centripetal acceleration (N=Fg-mv2/r) " This is what I was saying, I just wanted to be sure that it's equally valid to look at this only using centripetal...- I_wonder_why

Undergrad What causes the centripetal acceleration of the earth?
Hi tiny-tim, Is this a valid approach? - The centripetal force applied to a person on the surface of the Earth must be supplied by gravity, the only inward-pointing force. However, this must be a NET inward force, meaning that the normal force from the Earth must be less than gravity by a...- I_wonder_why
