News Is Rick Santorum's Religious Extremism a Deal Breaker for Voters?
Interestingly, there are a number posting here that appear to be from single issue voters. Primary issues are religion and abortion. This view appears to me to be extreemly narrow minded and short-sighted. Even so, I certainly can't fault anyone for being a single issue voter - I am. My...- iceworm

Diesel Emergency Generator Amp Load
first a couple of basics: 1. The generator is rated at 650kw. That is the rating of the driver. If the gen has a 615kw load on it, the throttle will be wide open. If more load is added, the driver (engine) will slow down. This has nothing to do with the ratings of the alternator end. 2...- iceworm

Diesel Emergency Generator Amp Load
Good we finally got the issue. The short answer is, "I still don't know." I can't help with a design of a Legally Required Emergency Standby from my side of your keyboard. But maybe I can get you started looking in the right direction. Most of the issues are not going to be if the generator...- iceworm

Diesel Emergency Generator Amp Load
Whoops - I missed the "emergency" part of the title. Some jurisdictions have a limit for the voltage drop to an electric motor driven fire pump. If one of those is part of your application, that could really limit the available current. the worm- iceworm

Diesel Emergency Generator Amp Load
I'd look at the nameplate first. There will be a number on it. However, as psparky noted, the generator is 3 phase and his number is probably what it will show. If that number is all you needed, then the rest of this post is just noise. I won't feel a bit bad if you put it in the ignore...- iceworm

Undergrad Electromagnet for attracting Non-ferrous metals
Levi - I wasn't ignoring you , I just got back from work a few days ago. The references I have are the ones in post 6. I don't know enough about the physics to tell you if gold dust will be attracted. Just a guess, I assume you are interested in picking up the fines coming through a...- iceworm

Undergrad Electromagnet for attracting Non-ferrous metals
I was hoping for a bit more collective knowledge. Thanks anyway. This forum is addictive and interesting. I did enjoy hanging out here for a couple of day. Thanks for that as well. Addictive or not, I've got to get back to work. I'll be back. later, ice- iceworm

Why Can We Experience An Electric Shock From Neutral
It really doesn't matter much AC or DC. It depends mostly on voltage and skin resistance. As for DC, grounded or ungrounded system? An clean un-grounded DC system won't have a potential to earth. But all it takes a bit of dirt on one side of the source (battery) and the other side can get...- iceworm

Why Can We Experience An Electric Shock From Neutral
Assumptions: 1. US standard residential electrical system. Also true in Canada. I don't know about Brits. 2. By getting shocked from the neutral, you mean that you are touching the neutral conductor and some other grounded conductive surface (like bare feet on a concrete floor) and get...- iceworm

Engineering Whats the difference between an engineer and experimental physicist?
Big Brother decides to do a test on conceptual problem solving. They put a male Engineer in one corner and a male Physicist in the adjacent corner. Against the opposite wall is an engaging lady with a table set for a romantic dinner. The Engineer and the Physicist are given the following...- iceworm

Engineering Whats the difference between an engineer and experimental physicist?
My kid built batteries out of lemons, carbon rods, and zinc coated nails for a science fair project. The power output was enough to get a small led to barely glow. One had to cup one's hands to see the glow. One of the judges made a comment that the led was pretty dim. My kid answered with...- iceworm

High School ZIPLINE PROJECT, make object travel 7.4 meters and back on a horizontal zipline
Now you will need a trigger. When the Rube Goldberg hits the end-of-the line - a trigger switches over to the driving the other direction. Hummm ... still sounds expensive. How about two model rocket motors? Fuse the second one long enough to not light until after the contraption hits the... -

High School ZIPLINE PROJECT, make object travel 7.4 meters and back on a horizontal zipline
4.5 lbs and $50 is a pretty tight budget. Let's see what you have to work with. "a straight, horizontal zip-line ...and then travel back ...to the starting point" - so you don't get to trade any vertical heigth for energy. The operation will require an energy source - both directions... -

Fluid Speed in Pipe: Is Turbine an Obstacle?
If the turbine isn't leaking - the mass of the fluid entering the turbine equals the mass of the fluid leaving. So if the inlet and outlet are the same size and the fluid is not compressible, the the velocity in and out are the same. There will be a pressure drop across the turbine - has to be...- iceworm
