Undergrad Question about one part of the Ratio Test proof
Hugely appreciate the reply scurty! It answered my question. I've been staring at this proof for a couple of hours. I was getting stuck on the logic of how we would know that the r^2 would not make the term less than the An+1 rather that using the inequality given. This is what I was... -

Undergrad Question about one part of the Ratio Test proof
Hi, there is a proof of the ratio test that I have seen a couple of times here: http://tutorial.math.lamar.edu/Classes/CalcII/RatioTest.aspxI don't know how to use latex, so abs(x) will mean absolute value I am ok with this: abs( aN+1) < r abs(aN) I don't understand where the r2 come from in... -

Is mathematics a young man's game?
A couple of things come to mind: “Genius is 1% talent and 99% percent hard work...” ― Albert Einstein second, I've heard a thousand times before that you shouldn't choose a career path because of the money, do it because you love it. Wanting to be a professional mathematician...- ivan77

High School What is the formula for calculating the central angle of a cone?
Realized the problem. It boils down to the formula for a arclength s = theta*radius (circle) where s is 2*pi*r (r is the radius of the cone) and the l is the radius of the circle. -

Undergrad Calculus book recommendation (CompSci)
The later chapters of James Stewart's Early Transcendentals (I'm going through 6th ed) is a solid book. Easy to understand and not too rigorous. http://www.stewartcalculus.com/media/8_home.php take a look at the drop down in the web links section as it outlines what chapters are in the... -

High School What is the formula for calculating the central angle of a cone?
Hi, If you have a cone (right angle) with radius r, slant length l, how is the central angle theta = 2*pi*r/l? Thanks, Ivan77 -

Undergrad Exponential Growth and Decay: Differentiating with Respect to Time
That is exactl it! I didnt realize that r in this case was a constant. That totally makes sense now. The differentiation with respect to t of rt would simply be r. much appreciated! Thanks for the links as well. Ivan -

Undergrad Exponential Growth and Decay: Differentiating with Respect to Time
Thanks for the reply. I now realize that impl diff doesn't make any sense (lets call it the severe flu I am fighting). The question I still have is this: d/dt A0*e^rt take A0 out and differentiate e^rt with respect to t Chain ruls has d/dt e^rt = e^rt * d/dt rt d/dt rt (using product... -

Undergrad Exponential Growth and Decay: Differentiating with Respect to Time
Hello, for continuous compouding (in the exponential growth and decay) the function for interest after t years is: A(t) = A0*e^rt A0 should be read A at time 0 in the book, they say when you differentiate this function this is what you get dA/dt = r*A0*e^rt = rA(t) I don't see... -

Software to use for calculus I-III
Hi Matt, what I am interested in is something where I can create the diagrams of what I am studying, vectors for example. but come to think of it, I guess some type of simple drawing program would work for the time being. Thanks again. Ivan- ivan77

Software to use for calculus I-III
Hi, Is there software that I can use while learning calc I-III? I don't need the software to give me the answers, but something that I can use to be able to manipulate formulas. Example. If I have to do a question in the textbook, I would have to write the integral and derivative...- ivan77

Undergrad How can I optimize my learning of advanced math?
thanks for the advice. I appreciate you taking the time to help me out. Rochfor1, ultimately, I am interested in being able to 'do things' with that which I am learning. I'll focus on doing lots of problems. Practical relevance is as important, if not more so, than the general intellectual...- ivan77
