Advice on Catching Up After 5 Years Away

I'm not trying to compare myself to them I'm just recognizing the reality that there are kids out there that are just as bright as I am(maybe "was" now...) that are ridiculously ahead of me that I can't compete with for graduate school. It's not about "first" its about "ever". These kids are...

Advice on Catching Up After 5 Years Away

It's not about it being a race from high school, but it IS a race into grad school. I feel like I already lost the day i decided to put a break between HS and college.

Advice on Catching Up After 5 Years Away

I always did well in HS , but never really felt like I had any idea what I wanted to do. Seeing so many of my peers either jumping from one dead-end job to another, still living at home, and generally making no forward progress I graduated and made the decision to join the armed forces. 5 years...

Calc 1 practice exam question -- finding the y intercept of the tangent line

Oh dang thanks for clearing that up. Wow... can't believe i missed that. It just threw me off my game because it was different from any of the hw/quiz problems.

Calc 1 practice exam question -- finding the y intercept of the tangent line

Even if i did that it would leave b still in the form of a function of "x" without knowing the y or x-value how am i supposed to write the equation in a familiar form e.g. point-slope or slope-intercept? The way you're describing it I would end up with an equation that looks like "y=(derivative...

Calc 1 practice exam question -- finding the y intercept of the tangent line

No we weren't given the "x" value or "y" value at which we should take the tangent. But were asked to write the equation of the tangent line. It seems like they only really gave us two ways to find the slope.

Calc 1 practice exam question -- finding the y intercept of the tangent line

I was given the equation of a polynomial told to find the derivative. easy enough. Then asked to give the equation of the tangent line which I've only learned how to get in the form of the question: "find the equation of the tangent line at x=" They gave me the equation of a line parallel to...

    1+2+3+4+5+6+7+...... =-1/12?

I was some youtube videos and i got sucked into this channel called "numberphile". They were talking about infinite sets. In particular the set that is the sum of all natural numbers. Through some creative algebra they demonstrate the proof. Somehow the set that is equal to the sum of all...

Why is the int() function giving a different output for int(logBASE(512,2))?

I will admit I did originally think it was a Taylor series, but it seems like it would run into the same problem as the system is described as "shift and add" there must be an upper limit on the number of iterations.

Insights Science for Love or For Money - Comments

There's money in science? I only know debt... Edit: had to get in there first :P but seriously the reason I decided to study science was very much the same. We are and will always be enamored with the days/nights spent in the garage/basement or in the kitchen(oops). My mother used to get so...

Why is higher density causing higher surface gravity?

C'mon man this is a message board not an academic paper >.>, but if it really bothers you i can fix it. And before you say anything I put "pull" in quotation marks for you so no one would take it literally.

Why is higher density causing higher surface gravity?

Sorry that was poor wording. I meant to say that the gravitational force of the Earth didn't get any stronger in the sense that if you maintained your distance as the density increased there would be no effect.

Why is the int() function giving a different output for int(logBASE(512,2))?

It's incredibly easy for log functions to have numbers of iterations into the 100's, 1000's or higher. Your calculator likely computed this a 8.999999999~ for hundreds if not thousands of iterations before it hit one that was not a 9 or reached it's limit of iterations and rounded it...

Why is higher density causing higher surface gravity?

The total strength of the Earth's gravitational force hasn't gotten any stronger you've just moved closer to source. Maybe it would help if you imagined yourself standing on the Earth when suddenly it shrank to 1/4th it's size. If you were able to (stay alive) and maintain the exact same...

Is this exam question really too difficult?

The real problem is that no one is designing tests to be focused on critical thinking, because once you let that into the mix different students at different levels of understanding will come up with solutions in different ways that could all be correct. Like the difference between my answer and...
