Forces on each end of a breaking rope
I was thinking something along the lines of: when the (elastic) rope is tensioned it stores energy in a spring-like way; when the rope snaps the energy is released; however, the rope does not snap in the middle and therefore you have release of energy in 2 effective different lengths of rope...- J77

Forces on each end of a breaking rope
Long time no post but the following came up in a recent coffee time discussion: If you pull on a rope which is fixed to, say, a wall, and the rope breaks, what are the forces on each end of the rope. (We can assume the rope has some elasticity.) Putting it in other words, in equilibrium...- J77

Anybody not in the mood for christmas?
Overnight, it's turned into a winter wonderland in Amsterdam. Frost on all the trees, small canals frozen over... proper brass monkeys weather :-p Will decorate the tree later. Have the feeling it will snow...- J77

Itchy Rash Woes: Near Christmas Diagnosis
First? Of what? The 3rd week of December? More seriously, it could be a combination of the cold we've been experiencing over the past week. That, and the central heating I've had blasting out, have made my skin very dry and itchy.- J77

How many hours per day does a full-time professor spend on pure research?
Rubbish, you may get some like that but most people I know have families and leave their work at work. Perhaps if there's a grant deadline coming up one may work through the weekend/into the evenings, but the missus doesn't like it - J77

Forgetful Memory: Unusual Struggles with Everyday Life
I can't remember much at all. In particular, no day to day events inlcuding nothing from my childhood. To me, it seems quite natural to be this way -- confuses my brother tho', who remembers things from way back to the tiniest detail.- J77
