During optical pumping in a laser, is the wavelength of light that corresponds to the transition from the metastable state that yields the laser light removed? Otherwise, wouldn't a population inversion not be possible as these photons from the optical pumping would cause stimulated emission...

I was recently reading an article that attempted to explain how the results of the Cronin-Fitch experiment illustrated CP violation. (http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/particles/cronin.html) However, it wasn't very well explained. Could someone please explain this to me?

I'm relatively new to QFT and was wondering how the QED vacuum has a dormant zero average-field condition if there is a zero-point energy of the field as well? How is there a zero average and a zero point energy?
