Holes are not just emptiness of electrons. They have their own physical properties. Effective mass of hole or electrons is determined by second derivative of energy band in k-space by definition. So the effective masses of holes or electrons depends on its energy and momentum.

it's just convention. don't be bother too much.

If there exists a band gap, then it's semiconductor or insulator. If not, it's a metal or semi-metal.

What I did was linearly interpolating lattice constants and atomic pseudopotentials with introducing another empirical parameter to fit to experimental data.
