Graduate Orbital Angular Momentum and Photon Energy
The problem I am having is that the energy for a single photon is defined by E=pc=\hbar k c with the k vector. If the quantum state of the photon can also be written as the integration of L=m\hbar over varying probabilities is there a way to write the energy momentum relationship with respect...- jkg0

Graduate Orbital Angular Momentum and Photon Energy
Just a quick question on photon orbital angular momentum. In the equation for photon energy: E2 = p2c2 + m2c4 Is OAM counted in the p2c2 part? Or does the above equation only apply to photons with normal momentum and there is another term for the angular momentum? The normal relation for p...- jkg0

Graduate Solar Gravity: Is There Good Data?
Variance is Key I'm not that interested in the magnitude. I'm more interested in the variance. Low frequency changes in amplitude would slowly shift the orbits but high frequency oscillations in the center of gravity could transfer energy out to the planets. Does anyone know of an experiment...- jkg0

Graduate Solar Gravity: Is There Good Data?
Think about this hypothesis: Solar activity changes the distribution of mass on the sun. This change could move the center of mass of the sun, unless the distribution were symmetric. This would move the center of mass away from the center of rotation. This would cause a fluctuation in the...- jkg0

Undergrad Is Gravity Really a Pushing Force?
I've always thought about gravity as a pulling force but perhaps it isn't. Is there anything fundamentally wrong with thinking about gravity as a pushing force attenuated by matter?- jkg0

Graduate C Modulated Slit: Can Light Pass Through?
Clarification For clarification: First, by width I mean λ, the wavelength of the light in question. Second, for the slit imagine the intersection of two plates each with a narrow, slightly curved slit in them rotating past each other. The window will be the intersection of the two slits...- jkg0

Graduate C Modulated Slit: Can Light Pass Through?
Suppose a slit much wider than photons from a coherent source is placed in front of the source. Let this slit be opened and closed at a rate faster than one wavelength of the source. Will light pass through the slit?- jkg0

Graduate Could the Universe's Mass be Defined by Information Bits?
I've been thinking somewhat about how to link mass to a number of information bits. Consider the universe as a self-referential representation of information. Each particle in the universe may be defined relative to each other particle in the universe as some number of bits of information. In...- jkg0

Why Does My Espresso Machine Hiss When Unsealed?
I drink a lot of espresso. From my minimal knowledge of espresso machines, I understand that the water is heated into steam which creates pressure forcing the steam through the coffee grounds. After every batch of espresso I let the machine sit overnight unplugged. Presumably, the water gas...- jkg0

Graduate Is Space Quantized in Electromagnetic Fields?
As I have not even taken an undergraduate course in quantum physics please overlook my ignorance. I am curious about the nature of the electromagnetic fields and quantization. In the class I just took on electromagnetism we learned Maxwell's equations. If I take the Helmholtz wave equation...- jkg0

Can a CCD Be Used in Reverse to Generate Surface Charge?
I am working on a research project in which I will need to create a pattern of charge on the surface of a material. Could a CCD be run in reverse to create a pattern of electrons on its surface?- jkg0

Simplest way to approximate sqrt of complex numbers
I have a ton of homework with square roots of complex numbers. Like sqrt(2 + 3i) What is the fastest way to break these down into its approximates like 1.67 + 0.895i without using a TI89/Maple/Matlab/Mathmatica.- jkg0

Graduate How Does Light Behave on a Rotating Disc in Different Reference Frames?
Suppose one constructs a thought experiment similar to the famous light beam bouncing around a train car. In this experiment a laser and mirror are attached to the surface of a rotating disc such that the beam is sent through the center of the disc. From my understanding of the train experiment...- jkg0
