Why haven't whales evolved gills?
The problem is I'm not sure YOU know EXACTLY what parsimony or parsimonious means, though it's clear you have a general idea. I DO know what it means, and how the word is supposed to be used. For that reason it is hard to just assume what you mean. Thus I'm not absolutely certain what you...- johnnymorales

Why haven't whales evolved gills?
Thanks. About the only thing I would take issue with is your use of the word parsimonious. I'm sure I get your point, but only by extrapolation.- johnnymorales

Why haven't whales evolved gills?
As long as whales are warm blooded, gills will be incompatible with their make up. That they are warm blooded is why there has been no evolutionary changes that would make a whale able to breathe water despite the wholesale evolutionary makeover the ancestors of whales underwent to become...- johnnymorales

I Dawn dead in Ceres orbit, ran out of fuel Oct 2018
I had that same thought a few days ago when I first saw the picture, and made the comment that it looked like a pingo albeit it much larger than one on Earth on the article about the new pictures on phys.org. I imagine that without the restraints of gravity they'd be able to get much larger...- johnnymorales

That pyramid looks just like a cinder cone or stratovolcano on Earth. Though on Ceres is could very well be a cryovolcanic cinder cone. Here is a photo of Mt. Mayon on Earth it's close to a perfect match when you take into account the likely effects of much lower gravity on Ceres...- johnnymorales

Ceres/Mars as manufacturing outposts (analytic exercise)
Definitely true, but considering the massive cost with going and coming to Mars I imagine that would be an incidental cost. Also solar panels are on the cost of a dramatic increase in efficiency coupled with a drop in the cost of production which could make that difference inconsequential. My...- johnnymorales

Ceres/Mars as manufacturing outposts (analytic exercise)
Hi all, while I agree with your comment generally about Ceres, it's a mistake top think of Mars as a mostly dry planet. It has tons of frozen water, and considering the size difference probably more water than Ceres does. Recent surveys to detect water ice showed there are extensive regions in...- johnnymorales

How do micro black holes maintain their state?
All that I've read about black holes describe something so massive it's gravity overcomes all other forces and it causes a region of spacetime to develop that no particle or electromagnetic radiation can escape from. That explanation since it depends on mass makes no sense in regard to...- johnnymorales

What benefits do bacteria on your skin provide?
Left unsaid is how this happens during vaginal birth. LOL Women almost always defecate during labor as their ability to control their anal sphincter is severely compromised and completely overwhelmed by their concentrated effort to push the baby out. As a result no matter how hard...- johnnymorales

Does the rectum have taste buds?
You are confusing the sense of taste with the sense of pain. In the case of hot peppers most people consider it a pleasurable sensation, but nevertheless what we feel is a result of our sense of pain being triggered by the capacin. As you know we can feel pain in a lot of places. So...- johnnymorales

News Could Significantly Upping Defense Spending Help the Economy Recover?
next year's military budget is going to be $726 billion. This years was approx. $700 billion All that money 2 wars and we're mired in a deep recession with a sloooow recovery. That's about all the info/data anyone needs to understand that MORE military spending wouldn't do squat. And why in...- johnnymorales

News Could Significantly Upping Defense Spending Help the Economy Recover?
The question in and of itself is utter insanity, for it proposes to stimulate the economy increasing the already massive 1/2 Trillion (NOT 50Billion as someone said) Military budget. Two wars did NOT stop us from going into a deep recession in the least. (50,000 still in Iraq and still...- johnnymorales
