Ping-pong balls, Bernoulli, and water
Hi Susan, welcome! It's fun experimenting with your kids. Mine are grown now, except for one, so we don't get to do many projects anymore. We built a Rube Goldberg machine for part of her Physics final recently. There's an Education forum on the site, and the web has tons of experiments for... -
Science-based birthday gifts for kids
Haha, yeah, I should have thought of my own kids. I made a camera obscura once with foil over one of their bedroom windows, and had them run around outside in turns while they watched the upside down images on the opposite wall. They laughed and laughed, and learned a lot about optics. It's too...- johnnyrev

Interesting topics for undergraduate astrophysics research?
Magnets. I say that facetiously, I mean magnetic fields around exoplanets. Without them, we could never live in the "Goldilocks Zone." Check this research out, maybe it could use some review/expansion...- johnnyrev

Electrical Information on Items
I recommend an electrician for the wall work mentioned below. Is the ground on your A/C plug bad or missing, or are you using an adapter to convert a three-prong plug to a two-prong wall socket? Some A/Cs were meant to be plugged into a lone special socket, I think they were 20 or 25 amps, with...- johnnyrev

Pressure required for air flow through nozzle
Is this a real life situation, and is the port detachable from the bladder? You could merely install a gauge between the outlet and the .5" orifice to find your answer. Even if it's molded in you could attach a gauge and then another orifice, giving you something akin to a differential... -

My dog passed away on Fathers' Day just outside the Animal Emergency Clinic before we could get her inside. I really miss Sugar Bear.- johnnyrev

Science-based birthday gifts for kids
I first got interested in electronics with a little kit that let me build a radio with springs that clipped wires together. They may have been Fahnestock clips. You can get simple ones that make little lamps, run motors and fans, etc, maybe even solar stuff today.- johnnyrev

Is this forum a helpful resource for first-year physics students?
Welcome! I know you will find helpful, knowledgeable people, sprinkled with a bit of good humor at times. Here are some links to get you started. Some are questions, but the answers in the threads are written by some mentors and experts in their fields you could follow...- johnnyrev

News What is the recent tribute song released for the Orlando nightclub shooting?
I want to make it clear from the outset that I am not trying to proselytize, convince, convert, persuade, or otherwise in any way. But please read to the end, or at least scroll down to the end. This is a tough one for me as a former Baptist pastor and seminarian. I can't see anywhere after...- johnnyrev

Courses What is the scope for aerospace engineering?
The only class in my HS with the word "mechanics" was Power Mechanics, where we learned to fix snowmobiles. We did have the option to stay in an extra 13th year to enroll in A&P courses through the University of Alaska Fairbanks paid for by the school district, which I did :)- johnnyrev

Reducing servo motor jitter noise
You don't want to reduce the voltage as the higher current needed to operate it, while initially offering more torque, will cause motor damage. The higher the voltage you run, the smaller the motor you can use; maybe that could be a solution? Field weakening would allow it to run faster, which...- johnnyrev

Courses What is the scope for aerospace engineering?
Excellent, I knew one of the major manufacturers would have some interest in your chosen region. Keep that math on top. Fluid mechanics is a part of aerospace engineering, so the math will be difficult. As a maintenance guy, I was working with already established data. I've seen some of...- johnnyrev
