Cal Poly is a very respectable school--arguably the best in the Cal State system (it's a CSU, not a UC), but it is no where near as competitive as schools like UCLA or Harvard.

Santa Cruz? They're known for their astrophysics program, but I'm fairly certain it's not at the top in physics.
