If you have some fundamentals in nuclear engineering, I recommend a book THERMAL ANALYSIS OF LIQUID METAL FAST BREEDER REACTOR. And there are some materials in IAEA fast reactor database, such as Russian BN-XXs, French Phoenix and Super Phoenix, American EBR-II ect.- law&theorem

Which substance is the best moderator for fission reactors?
It's not "the best". Definition of "the best" is moderating ratio, so liquid D2 maybe "the best". D2 is gaseous state in environmental temperature. When D2 is compressed into liquid state, it would be "the best".- law&theorem
