How to Understand Scientific Papers/Judge Quality, Laypeople
Thanks for the additional info, Choppy, Hector Mata, and mfb. That's true that a lot of it is understanding logical fallacies and being aware of them. I agree that just because someone hasn't come across certain information, that doesn't mean they're ignorant per se, I feel people are stupid...- lesah

How to Understand Scientific Papers/Judge Quality, Laypeople
Hector Mata, Thanks for those links. I bookmarked the scholarlyoa site. Yeah, that sums up a main conflict I was having; Thinking that publication in a scientific journal (or what appears to be a scientific journal), means that there is credibility to the study or claim. This leads into a...- lesah

How to Understand Scientific Papers/Judge Quality, Laypeople
I mean more along the lines of were the methods the researchers used sound? Maybe an example would be better. There's all this talk that "vaccines cause autism." When I look up the research, all of the studies seem to show that there is no link between them. Yet, the issue doesn't go away...- lesah

How to Understand Scientific Papers/Judge Quality, Laypeople
I'd like to learn how I can better understand research papers/scientific studies, judge the quality, the methods used, find out who funded it, etc. I'm a layperson. In researching various topics, especially controversial subjects, I try to find the actual scientific papers behind everything...- lesah

Download Knowledgebase / Suggestions for Research Sites
Hi DEvens, Thanks for the reply. True, the downloadable part isn't necessary, as I can print PDF's of webpages. I don't have internet at home, so downloading a full or partial database would be more convenient. Even if it's not downloadable, if you or anyone has any preferred sites you go to...- lesah

Download Knowledgebase / Suggestions for Research Sites
I wasn't sure if this was better here, or somewhere in the Education sub-forums. I'm not in school, though. This is just for personal use; for fun and for research. At a glance: Looking for downloadable encyclopedias/knowledge-bases (non-Wikipedia, already have), and suggestions for research...- lesah

Writing fiction, steam power, hydrogen internal combustion engine
Okay . . now it makes sense. Thanks. Appreciate it. Yeah, that wouldn't even work for a fictional world. Never heard the concept of nuclear cars. Cool! I'll look into that, as it may work for this story.- lesah

Writing fiction, steam power, hydrogen internal combustion engine
Thanks for the additional information, everyone. I guess I missed the combustion part while researching hydrogen. Thanks. CalcNerd, Hey, that's a good idea. Hadn't thought of putting a steam turbine in a car or even a very small nuclear powerplant. - In engineering terms, the nuke plant...- lesah

Writing fiction, steam power, hydrogen internal combustion engine
Thanks for the replies. Ryan, I did do research on it. But I wasn't able to find out the specifics. I know that they had steam cars and there are hydrogen cars in production now. I was wondering if it was possible to have, specifically, a steam internal combustion engine, not the boiler, as...- lesah
