Can I send timed voltage with just capacitors or do I need a microcontroller?
you could also do it with a CPLD and a state machine or logic as well. The CPLD could at least be programable and reprogramed. It should be able to do anything discrete logic can do and more. With the uP you should be able to easily have user input to adjust the 3 parameters that you mentioned...- lifeattthesha

Capacitor and their behavior in AC
you could do it in MATLAB but you would need to write the governing equations then solve them. To hard for someone stupid like me. I would take the easy way out and just use a tool designed to do just that. A spice tool is probably best. And a free schematic spice tool is even better. go here...- lifeattthesha

Why is AC Power Transmission More Efficient Than DC for Long Distances?
Yes, as you say, I suppose if you consider the sea water as a secondary it would kind of "short" things out so to speak. L- lifeattthesha

Capacitor and their behavior in AC
Linear tech has a FREE spice engine called LT spice or something like that. Sometimes it is helpful to simulate these things if you do not understand what is going on. In general if you look at the voltage across the capacitor, say with an oscilloscope, then you swept the frequency of your...- lifeattthesha

Why is AC Power Transmission More Efficient Than DC for Long Distances?
yes they sure are in fact did you know that the analysis of a 3 phase induction motor can be though of as a transformer with 2 airgaps and a shorted secondary? L- lifeattthesha

Need help converting flashlight bulb to LED
There are a couple of things you can do. 1. you can string a few 20mA LED in series until you get the brightness you want, but with a Vf of 3V or so you will not be able to get very many in there. 2. go to digikey and find something with just a bit more kick. 3. go for the gusto and build a...- lifeattthesha

Need help converting flashlight bulb to LED
That looks to be about right. but my concern is this 19.2 volts is kind of a weird voltage and a LED that is 20mA is not going to be too bright for a flash light. most of the high power LED flash lights are using 1W 3W or higher LED powers and they can be set around 350mA or more. Also what ever...- lifeattthesha

Why is my state machine output being synthesized away?
About the only advice I could give (I'm a verilog person as well) is that I normally will separate the actual register assignments , (the clocked state memory) from the continuous assignments or the next state logic. This will also help or force the compiler to choose a one hot state machine or...- lifeattthesha

Alternating poles in the stator of an alternator
I'm pretty sure that the magnetic pole detector is used to identify poles of a steady state field. The alternator does not have a steady state field in it. It generates AC voltage then rectifies it. If the detector is sensitive enough you should be able to hold it up to a single wire carrying...- lifeattthesha

Why is AC Power Transmission More Efficient Than DC for Long Distances?
AC is technically not superior to DC transmission. The reason we in the US have AC lines is the cost of DC line plus other benefit like simple 2 way transformers. In general the skin effect is minimal at 50 or 60Hz. The high voltage transmission lines can range from 765KV to 138KV after the...- lifeattthesha
