Other Should I Address a Grad Student Colleague's Constant Sleeping?
jtbell, Yes, the student should have completed their thesis and defended by now (2010 entry into program). They were an RA up until January 2018, when they became a TA again.- lonewolf219

Other Should I Address a Grad Student Colleague's Constant Sleeping?
jtbell, thanks for post... I guess there are a few more details that I didn't share but I am still going to stay out of it. The student was supposed to have graduated by now. The student has said they won't work weekends or at home, and that the department is only really paying for thirty...- lonewolf219

Other Should I Address a Grad Student Colleague's Constant Sleeping?
ZapperZ, Ok, thank you for the reply. It is only one student I am speaking of in the office. It genuinely bothers me because I feel like this student is taking advantage of the situation. But, I agree that it is between the student and the department. There is some snoring throughout the...- lonewolf219

Other Should I Address a Grad Student Colleague's Constant Sleeping?
Hi, I am a grad student and share an office with 4 other grad students. I have a question about one of the students. We have been in the same office for 2 yrs. The student mostly sleeps while they are here. Every day this week, the student has slept from almost the moment they get in. I...- lonewolf219

Graduate Boundary condition for dielectric sphere
Is the potential across the boundary continuous for a dielectric sphere embedded in a dielectric material, so that the potential inside the sphere can be set equal to the potential outside of it at r=R ?- lonewolf219

Help with tensor formulation of special relativity
Homework Statement Hi, I can't seem to understand the following formula in my professor's lecture notes: F_αβ = g_αγ*g_βδ*F^(γδ) Homework Equations Where g_αβ is the diagonal matrix in 4 dimensions with g_00 = 1 and g_11 = g_22 = g_33 = -1 and F^(γδ) is the electromagnetic tensor with c=1...- lonewolf219

CG coefficient in Wigner Eckhart Theorem-how to find
Homework Statement The Clebsh Gordon coefficient is < 11;00 |11> = < l_1,m_1;l_2m_2 | kq > Homework Equations My professor determined the CG to be 1 The Attempt at a Solution How do we look up these numbers in the table? What is the direct product basis? 1x1? What is JM and what is m_1 and...- lonewolf219

Undergrad Exploring Gas Temperature Measurement with Infrared Laser Technology
Thanks for the replies, sorry I am a little late here... I am curious about testing hydrogen gas. I was thinking about the infra red non contact thermometers, yes, you are right Zapper Z. But I think those can only be measured on a surface, is that correct? If I used a real IR laser, could it...- lonewolf219

Undergrad Exploring Gas Temperature Measurement with Infrared Laser Technology
I am thinking about a possible experiment, and would like to measure the temperature of gas in various places inside of a glass enclosure. Is it possible to use an infrared laser to this? Thanks- lonewolf219

Graduate Electric flux versus magnetic flux
Shyan, OK, thanks for your post. I think I see what you mean... the emf defined here as a change in the magnetic flux only applies for motional emf? There are other ways to generate emf... Does Faraday's Law then mean that whenever we have a changing magnetic field, we have an emf?- lonewolf219

Graduate Electric flux versus magnetic flux
Thanks Shyan. ε=-\frac{d\Phi}{dt}, so a changing magnetic flux creates an electromotive force, is that right?- lonewolf219

Graduate Electric flux versus magnetic flux
I'm taking E & M II... Would anyone agree that the following statements are true? An electric field changing in time gives rise to a displacement current. A magnetic field changing in time gives rise to an electromotive force.- lonewolf219
