Graduate What exactly is stopping us from unifying GR and quantum mechanics?
Being a novice in this field but infinitely interested in this issue, one of the "clashes" I see between SR/GR and QM is the definition of gravity. SR/GR do not specify the mechanical aspects of how gravity works; it only expresses the mathematical notions of how it behaves. QM, also, does not...- LongOne

Why Does light have a speed limit.?
WRT to this question and others, primarily what is the physical mechanism for gravity, I discovered a series of papers by Tom Ostoma and Mike Trushyk, published in the '90's, that sets forth a theory that, to me, really make sense. These papers are available at [PLAIN]www.arxiv.org;[/URL] you...- LongOne

Why Does light have a speed limit.?
Up until recently, I thought not. But I read from an authority within just the last few days that a compressed spring, which has stored energy, will actually weight more than before it was compressed, although the delta is infintestimally small. Same should hold for hotter water.- LongOne

Graduate Is Light's Speed Limit Universal for All Massless Particles?
Thanks, all, for thoughtful replies. I now understand that there does not appear to be any general consesus as to what causes the physical manifestation. Does anyone know of a group or individual that I might find on the Internet that is working on this? Thanks.- LongOne

Graduate Is Light's Speed Limit Universal for All Massless Particles?
Since massless particles with energy move at this same upper limit, how do the electrical properties of the void figure into this?- LongOne

Graduate Why three generations of particles
Hi, I'm curious as to what the most prevalent theories are as to why there are three generations of particles. I've roamed around the Internet but haven't found anything that speculates on this. If you can point me to an article or document, that would be great! Thanks.- LongOne

Graduate Is Light's Speed Limit Universal for All Massless Particles?
Hi, (I've searched and couldn't find anything about this in the forums, but please excuse me if this is a duplicate of another post). I clearly understand that "c" is the maximum speed at which "things" can move (with certain restrictions, caveats, etc). But it seems to be also true that...- LongOne

Why Does light have a speed limit.?
Hi Russ, I think you overstated this in sort of a demeaning manner to your correspondent. Brainstorming is a valuable part of scientific work during the early part of the process. Prior to the time that a theory is developed and a prediction/hypothesis can be formulated, there are many...- LongOne

Graduate The speed of light, gravity, strong force, weak force
I could benefit from someone shedding some light on a couple of questions that I have regarding the speed of various entites: 1) It seems that the speed of gravity, e.g, if the sun disappeared, is the speed of light WRT things I've read. What is it that would inherently cause gravity to travel...- LongOne

Graduate How Does Dark Matter Influence Our Understanding of Atomic Structure?
Your example is an excellent one. Although I've had advanced math training during my electrical engineering courses, that was forty years ago and I don't immediately recall the mechanics of much of the more advanced topics. When I read "The divergence of the electric field ...", I know exactly...- LongOne
