Tricky word problems common in physics?

The original statement of the problem in English was a mis-translation of the Norwegian. Tom would take 3 hours to travel the whole distance (150km) and Jane would take 5 hours to travel the whole distance (150 km).

Tricky word problems common in physics?

Tom is traveling at 50 km/h and Jane at 30 km/h. Tom starts an hour earlier, so travels for (1+t) hours compared to t hours for Jane. So, 50 (1+t) + 30 t = 150 Thus, t = 1.25 hours Distance traveled by Tom is 50 (1+t) = 112.5 km. The book is correct.

Where Should I Pursue My Passion for Space Exploration and Physics?

In the UK the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE) is the home of the Joint European Torus, the world's largest magnetic fusion experiment. They have PhD and MSc positions available in collaboration with various UK universities (PhD and MSc opportunities). The University of York has an MSc in...

What do I learn in a PhD in Physics (UK)?

It's not true that UK PhD students aren't taught classes. When I did a PhD in theoretical high energy physics, the first year was about 60% classes and 40% research. It might be different for experimentalists, I don't know.

I want to study Chemistry, What can I do?

The app market is absolutely saturated with apps. Even if you build a good app, it may not make you much money. Most apps don't make any significant amount of money, certainly not enough to live on. If you are interested in becoming a computer programmer then by all means make an app, as it'll...

Physics Astrophysicist turned video game programmer?

Or, a really good tech demo. If you are going to put games in your portfolio then it's probably better to have one (or two) very polished games than six mediocre ones. Of course, you might make lots of little games for practice or fun, but they don't all need to go in your portfolio. For the...

Other Self-Study Physics: Guide to Feasible Plan & Resources

Having thought further, I'd drop Nakahara as it is probably too difficult (find a more introductory book). And I might replace Wald with Weinberg's book on GR or something more modern. QFT could be pushed a few places earlier in the list, if you want.

Other Self-Study Physics: Guide to Feasible Plan & Resources

It is over 15 years since I studied physics so some of my book suggestions may be dated or out-of-print. There may be better, more modern treatments of the subjects. I'm not very familiar with Halliday and Resnick, but it looks like a decent introduction to physics, covering a good range of...

Need help picking university course -- Physics vs Comp Sci

I work at a game development company, and the programmers have a variety of different degrees: typically, computer science, physics, engineering, or mathematics. So I'd say any STEM degree is fine. If you opt not to do a CS degree then you'll just have to learn about data structures, algorithms...
