Seeking Honest Advice: Career, Finances, and Goals
I have another silly question. If I get a Ph.D in computer science and simultaneously get my masters in math. Do you think I could get a pure research job in AI and robotics and still do math research on the side?- mathcompsci

Schools What are the best schools for Neurophysics/Comp. Neuroscience
I just found (seconds ago) a gold mine for you. My wife will be quite pleased also. There is a massive list of all the Neuroscience programs in what appears to be all of North America at the following site. I did a quick search for the state MA and it saved me a lot of time from going to...- mathcompsci

Programs Is Biology an Ideal Fallback Major for Those with Average Mathematical Skills?
I concur. It does take enormous amounts of internal motivation. I just happen to think math is awesome. But I know it is the hardest subject for me. To be totally honest. It's the only subject I couldn't guarantee an A in with hard work. One of the major reasons I stuck with math is...- mathcompsci

Seeking Honest Advice: Career, Finances, and Goals
Thanks Moonbear. Cool. We'll look into this together. Ironically there is another post just added about neuroscience, and a responder said University of Rochester has a great program and they're literally only 2 miles from our apartment. You say one could buy a house and move often...- mathcompsci

Programs Is Biology an Ideal Fallback Major for Those with Average Mathematical Skills?
I'm going to have to say math skills can be learned by hard work, and I'm proof of it. I failed math in high school and most subjects. I went into a "special program" where I went to work in a near by factory for the first half of the day. There were 30 students or so in this program from 5...- mathcompsci

Courses Need advice on some math courses
Hi. I got A's in my algebra courses for undergrad. We had multiple ones. But I took a C in the grad one. That and the C I got for grad topology are the only grades lower than a B on my transcript. Here's my advice. Do an independent with an algebra type professor in algebra. Make it a...- mathcompsci

Seeking Honest Advice: Career, Finances, and Goals
Thanks for replies! I know I asked tough questions to give advice on. My wife and I discussed for some time last night what to do. We've concluded that we'll both work for 5 or so years and pay off the debts. We figure if we keep our lifestyle at 30k a year, and use the other 30 to 50k a...- mathcompsci

Programs I want to build and design weapons, what to major in?
Hi Gerry, I say mechanical or electrical engineering. Physics if you like the theory more than the application. Chemical engineering sounds like a sure fire bet too. There's more to building weapons than the engineering. You could also study other things. I've never seen Iron Man...- mathcompsci

Schools Can Distance Learning Offer a Fresh Start for Struggling Students?
Yup. Community college. I did it because I did horrible in high school. Then I joined the navy and "squared" myself away, but I had to go to a community college. But I did end up getting my bachelors from a good University.- mathcompsci

Seeking Honest Advice: Career, Finances, and Goals
I'm in need of some honest advice. I have these strong desires for my career(s) and the way my wife and I live, but I also have some serious obstacles. There's a lot of background info, so I hope it's not boring. I'll do my best to put it in bullet form. Ready? I'll state my goal and our...- mathcompsci

Considering a Math PhD & Computer Science Professorship: Pros & Cons
Thanks Maverick. Yeah it does seem like I could do either. But I feel strongly pulled towards both - really strongly pulled. Today, despite having graduated last Friday, I have studied both algebra and differential geometry (two of my favorite subjects) and I have studied genetic algorithms...- mathcompsci

Considering a Math PhD & Computer Science Professorship: Pros & Cons
Hi. I have a question about careers. I'm graduating this semester with a bachelors in pure math. I've been accepted into a computer science masters. I plan to study AI for my masters, and hopefully some applied math. What I would like to do is this, go for my Ph.D. in math...- mathcompsci
