Smart magnets that connect either way?

"Smart magnets" that connect either way? Hi all. I was wondering about a particular kind of toy train that is sold to young children these days. I bought a few for my son for Christmas, and I am trying to figure out how they work. The train cars have magnetic connectors that can attach to the...

Is Larson's Calculus (8th edition) the best self-teaching book for mathematics?

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Strang's Calculus. I learned from Stewart in school, but then came across Strang and found it better and more comprehensive in every way. Everyone else I've spoken to who is familiar with the two of them agrees with me. It would be worth checking out!

The third edition has particularly good reviews on Amazon, but it is slightly more expensive. I would just go ahead and buy...

Help me understand the inductive solution to the lines in the plane problem?

Oh, I see now. After squinting at your post for a long while, I finally realized I had made an error in my algebra that was preventing me from getting from the middle part of the equation to the last part. It made it look like there was something mystical going on, but I guess it's pretty...

Help me understand the inductive solution to the lines in the plane problem?

Hi, This is my first post, but I'm not sure this is the right place for it. I am studying (independently, not in school) the lines in the plane problem that was originally solved by Jakob Steiner in 1826, which is a recurrence. The problem is to find the maximum number L[n] of regions defined...
