Programs What Languages would be Helpful for Physics majors to learn?
If you were horrible at French or Spanish, then you're likely to have *much* more trouble with Japanese or Chinese, assuming your native language is English. Stick to whichever language is offered that is generally considered easiest to learn for the speakers of your native language...- motx

Skeptical about undergraduate research
I got to work on stuff that was years beyond what my freshman training had me ready for and now my name is printed somewhere in some little chemistry journal because of it. I certainly didn't make any brilliant discoveries. I certainly didn't even understand the chemistry as well as a person...- motx

Schools How important is foreign language for math (graduate school)?
Can anyone comment on how useful knowing mandarin is for reading mathematics/science papers? I've seen threads like these slowly growing. It seems like people are interested in learning mandarin and just hoping that it will also be useful in their mathematics/science studies. That said...- motx

Which foreign languages to learn as a mathematician?
I have committed more than 3000 hours of time to studying Mandarin and I still have a long way to go. In your case, since you are fluent in Vietnamese, you may have a leg up in listening and speaking, but it won't help much when it comes to reading. I've studied alongside people who grew up...- motx

Best foreign language for aerospace industry
Despite English being a compulsory subject in China, you would be surprised at just how low the level of fluency of most of its students in China is. Take the top scorers on the English portion of the national college entrance exam and sit them down to have a conversation with a native...- motx

Where Can I Purchase Chinese Math and Science Texts?
Right. The chinese bookstores around here carry only the most elementary mathematics texts in chinese. I'm currently in a rather intense program to learn chinese-mandarin. I have next to no time to study anything outside my target language. The idea is to be able to study chinese and math...- motx

2 integrals - - (within next 30 mins if possible)
\int_0^{b}\frac{dx}{x+\sqrt x} This thing works out nicely if you factor out \sqrt{x}, giving you \sqrt{x}\left(\sqrt{x} + 1\right) Then let u = \left(\sqrt{x} + 1\right) and you're almost done.- motx

Schools Seriously, what is grad school like?
Just thought I'd point out that you do not need a ph.d for quant finance. Take a look at some of the financial engineering programs out there. Particularly, check out Baruch College's webpage for their masters in financial engineering to view some employment and admission stats.- motx

Undergrad Proving ABC is Isosceles: Triangle ABC and Bisectors
Right. I realize now the very obvious mistake I made. I chose to draw the triangle equilateral, giving me the right angles I needed. Of course, that breaks the rules from the get-go.- motx

Undergrad Proving ABC is Isosceles: Triangle ABC and Bisectors
I understand what you're saying, however, all I am using here is sin=opp/hyp. In my construction, sin(beta) = BD/hyp, and sin(alpha)=AE/hyp. If they share the same hypotenuse (side AB in my post), then because AE=BE the two angles will be the same. Here's my problem: I do believe I...- motx

Working Alone or Together: How Do Students Approach Homework Problems?
Work with peers that are approximately at your same skill level and you will learn a tremendous amount in a fraction of the time. If you feel your group plowed through difficult problems far faster than you would have on your own, and you feel that there is something to be learned from...- motx

Undergrad Proving ABC is Isosceles: Triangle ABC and Bisectors
If we let \alpha = ABE and \beta = DAB, does then sin\alpha=AE/AB and sin\beta=BD/AB? And since AE = BD, then \alpha and \beta are equal? Am I making assumptions from my sketch here?- motx
