Why Can Hydrophobic Molecules Pass Through the Amphipathic Plasma Membrane?
Well water can diffuse through a membrane and it's pretty hydrophillic. What you're really looking for though is unfavorable energetics. Polar molecules are far less favored to diffuse through a membrane than a lipid molecule. And that stems from the fact that they are in solution. Polar and...- Mr.V.

Need help with a project involving heavy metals
Does it have to be just one? Or can you remove them all? Because for $15, distillation is in your price range. If it has to be just one, here's a page on how they remove iron from well water ... but again, seems like just boil and condense the water'll do the trick...- Mr.V.

Where do 35S and 32P come from?
Hi all, I remember a long time ago in high school our bio teacher mentioned that radiotracers used in biology back in the 40s-50s came out of the Manhattan project. But searching through google, i haven't really been able to find which radiotracers that we commonly use in biology come from... -

High School Why do my eyelashes look enormous
...when looking through a micrcoscope? I for the most part understand why the image on the slide is magnified. I'm not quite sure why anything that sits in front of the eyepiece gets magnified. This must have to do somehow with its compound nature of the microscope because when I look through a... -

Question about determining probability
Hi! I have a data set of ~5000 unique elements. From that set I have 2 subsets that are not mutually exclusive. For example if the elements are letters from A-Z, the first set could be A, B, C, D, E, F, and G the second set could be E, F, G, H, I, and J. Here's the question... The first...- Mr.V.

Undergrad Momentum vs Energy: What Matters in Impact?
I see arildno. I think I understand it now. Momentum is a value that is always conserved vs kinetic energy which is mutated. I must have remembered it wrong that kinetic energy was also conserved. Thanks everyone for your help! -

Undergrad Momentum vs Energy: What Matters in Impact?
I see...so the "energy" of the first bullet with 500J that comes to rest is lost to other things like friction/heat/etc and its momentum knocks the target backwards but to a lesser degree than the bullet with more momentum. But that bullet would have less energy transferred to friction/heat/etc... -

Why do you get old and ultimately die
If you are truly interested the Febuary issue of Cell February 25, 2005: 120 (4) deals entirely with aging. The grand review describes 4 different theories. 1. Somatic mutation theory: In essence, longer lived individuals typically have higher levels of a protein known as "poly(ADP-ribose)...- Mr.V.

Undergrad Momentum vs Energy: What Matters in Impact?
Hi thanks for taking the time to read this. I apologize in advance for the length. Anyway, at some point in my education I allegedly learned about energy and momentum and someone even saw fit to give me an 'A', but when thinking about the simple concepts again a couple of years later I suddenly...
