UofT or Waterloo for MIT Grad Studies?
I can speak from experience, I go to U of T and I one of the places I am going to apply to next year is MIT. The level of difficulty of the computer science courses are pretty much the same for both U of T and Waterloo. But if you are applying for graduate school, then research experience is...- Msh1

Programs Are Older Grad Students and PhDs Successful in Physics Programs?
I am doing a research project as an undergrad along side two P.h.d students both of whom are 30+. One of them is 32 and will probably finish in two years. The other one is 34 and will finish this year. Both of them are actually better students than the three other typical p.h.d's who work for...- Msh1

Winning physics/math competitions
Your own university should have math and physics competitions for its own undergrads. Usually if you are among the top 5 in your own university math competition you can compete in the Putnam competition in which students from across the North America compete. However, if you have never been...- Msh1

Engineering What does it takes to be a physicist compared to an engineer?
I go to U of T, though not engineering science or physics, but I have a lot of friends in Engineering science, physics and other engineering programs. From what I have heard, and also by judging the course requirements for both engineering science and physics, it is a lot better to go to physics...- Msh1

Schools I with choosing a university in Canada.
All those schools can provide you with a great education in physics. However, it depends on what you are planning to do after graduation. If you want to go directly into the job market then Waterloo's co-op program seems pretty promising, although Toronto has this thing called PEY too. In...- Msh1

Where Can I Publish My Theory of Everything If I'm Under 18?
I advise you not to discuss your theory face-to-face with a person (or worse a group of people). The odds are you will be greatly humiliated and ridiculed. It is good that you are discussing this here though because you learn not to make such ambitious claims next time.- Msh1

Category Theory: Intro Texts & Recommended Books
I read a book titled "Basic Category Theory for Computer Scientists" by Benjamin C.Pierce a few months ago. It is fairly short and straightforward and doesn't require a lot of background knowledge.- Msh1

Courses Advanced Math for Graduate Theoretical Physics: What to Take?
discrete math, logic, combinatorics, number theory and graph theory have absolutely no use physics. In your list advanced linear algebra, is the most important one you should take as it is used everywhere in quantum and classical mechanics. After linear algebra I would say take real analysis...- Msh1

3 Math and 3 Physics Classes in the same semester?
It really depends on your background and level of intellect but for an average math/physics student this is a NIGHTMARE! taking 6 courses may not be very difficult but the courses that you listed are very difficult to take at the same time. For example the abstract algebra course that you listed...- Msh1

Is Taking Linear Algebra with DiffEq Better Than Taking It After?
Linear Algebra is very fundamental for studying more advanced mathematics. I am surprised how you were allowed to take Multivariable Calculus without having a course in Linear Algebra. Differential Equations on the other hand is not heavily used in more advanced math specially. So I would say...- Msh1

Schools How can I stand out as a grad school applicant?
That is true but I am planning on taking 6 graduate courses in the area that I want to apply for during that extra year (I have heard it makes a difference) and also do another full summer of research. That might get me into at least one of them assuming I will maintain my GPA. I am not 100%...- Msh1

Courses Take Graduate Courses Now for Grad School: Benefits & Resume Impact
Well, my school was exactly the same. However, I first talked to the professor of the course and asked him to write a letter confirming that I am eligible to take the course, then I gave the letter to dean of graduate school. I am sure if you do that it won't be a problem.- Msh1

Courses Take Graduate Courses Now for Grad School: Benefits & Resume Impact
Yes, specially in mathematics because graduate courses in mathematics usually require a much higher level of "mathematical maturity" and that can look really good on resume. But remember it only looks good if you actually get a decent grade, if you take a graduate course and pass with a 55% it...- Msh1

Schools How can I stand out as a grad school applicant?
Ok, how do you think you can prove to them that you have developed mastery or that you can "do things"?. You might be more qualified than someone with really high grades but this has to be reflected upon something! like research, try to get your name on a few publications. Again I am not trying...- Msh1

Schools How can I stand out as a grad school applicant?
I don't want to disappoint you but your GPA worries me a lot. I speak from experience I am a 4th year computer science and mathematics student. I applied to MIT, Stanford, Princeton, Carnegie Mellon, Harvard, Caltech, Cornell and Berkeley last summer for theoretical computer science. I was only...- Msh1
