How does (a,b)=(1,0) get to 1+sqrt{2}? Do you mean (a,b)=(1,1) is a solution so that 1+1*sqrt{2} is a unit?
In order to generalize solutions to (1+sqrt{2})^k, k in Z, do we think about is as such.. if a is a unit, there exists b, such that...
