    Undergrad Do we understand electromagnetics?

Yes, but none of these tell us what the electromagnetic field actually is For example if I were to describe the dimensions and other physical characteristics of an airplane to some one it still wouldn't give him any idea as to what keeps it up in the air.

    Undergrad Do we understand electromagnetics?

I agree. Our current theories describe the behaviour of electromagnetic waves, but cannot explain the true "nature" of the electromagnetic field.

News Iran nuke program stopped in 2003

Here is something I had posted earlier on the thread "What to do about Iraq". now were are being led to believe that a nuclear Iran will be a threat to world peace, which is as big a load of bull as the WMD story. Why doesn't the American government have an issue with nuclear arms in...

High School What is space, vaccuum, or nonexistence?

It appears that the answer to your question is that we really do not have the complete picture of matter and energy. As of now they are concepts which will finally lead to a complete understanding...

Are Certain Acts Like Torturing Children Always Morally Wrong?

Do we need to define evil? Do we need to come up with a moral code that is acceptable to all? I think the answer lies in the word "care" If you don't care for your fellow human, if you don't care for the forests and the wild life if you don't care for our planet, no defination of evil, no...

    A collision of apocalyptic visions.

"Frustrating" is a rather mild word for such fanaticism. I didn't or rather couldn't go through the entire video. Can such utter disregard for life truly be called religion? Two of the greatest evils created by mankind: 1) Organized religion (which in my oponion is no better than...

Can Buddha's Ultimate Reality Be Understood Through Science?

Trying googling "Jakob Boehme" and see what you come up with. Also some time ago I came across a poem called "The cornfield" which also had a similar theme, unfortunately I am unable to get that poem again or remember the name of the poet.

Can Buddha's Ultimate Reality Be Understood Through Science?

To begin with, the original texts were written in Sanskrit (if I remember correctly) and the translation to English and other languages may not be entirely accurate. For example the word "maya" has been translated as "illusion" which is not exactly correct. I have not much knowledge on this...

Can Buddha's Ultimate Reality Be Understood Through Science?

The statement most probably means that the Buddha had "seen" the true nature of all things. In Eastern philosophy it is the creative force (for lack of a better word and no it does not imply the existence of a creator) that is the essence of all things. This creative force pervades through all...

High School Vacuum Insulation Cup: Best Way to Hold 1L of Boiling Water

Well great if you managed to get the air out. Just be careful the cups don't collapse due to the vaccum. Cheers!

High School Vacuum Insulation Cup: Best Way to Hold 1L of Boiling Water

Well there is no point creating a vacuum between 2 cups - which is going to be rather difficult to do- if the top is going to remain open, Your idea is right though ie to creat insulation. I would suggest to fill the gap with insulating material such as cork, and use silver foil for the inside...

High School Equal Forces - Bullet and train (opposite directions)

There could only be one outcome and that is the other person catches the ball, but to the stationary observer it is the catcher who (along with the train) moves towards the ball.

    Graduate Hypothetical question on Inertia

All matter (physical substance as defined by the Oxford dictionary) is capable of acceleration. The question is, is inertia an inherent property of matter, or is it a result of external influences that cause inertia and thus give us the "effect" of mass.

High School Can a Man Jump in a Moving Train and Land on the Same Spot?

Yes, provided the train is traveling at a uniform velocity. You could consider the Earth traveling through space as your "train". If you were to jump you would land on the same spot, yes?

Undergrad Understanding the Relationship Between Moving Electrons and Magnetic Fields

Lets say if some one were to ask what makes an airplane stay up in the air and if I was to reply that there is some guy upfront who is keep it up in the air, would I be wrong? What you have stated above describes the nature of a field but does little to explain the mechanism behind it
