Read : Slotine J.J.E., Li, W., "Applied nonlinear control", Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Prentice-Hall, 1991. it is a good book for starters. Not too mathematical. It will introduce you to the concepts of nonlinear controls.- omega_M

Are engineers with a Phd scientists ?
I think you are taking the generalization to its extreme. Your definition is largely philosophical, or even religious for that matter. All endeavors that search for something will end up being a subset of your definition in the larger context.- omega_M

Are engineers with a Phd scientists ?
Just wanted to know if PhDs with engineering background still remain engineers or can also be called scientists. I know the distinction between professionals at that level of research is kind of vague. But is it a norm to call engineers with PhD, scientists ? Thanks.- omega_M

I already mentioned that you may know more about physics than me, and obviously you do. But I respectfully disagree with your general conclusion that every physicist has the same views as you do. What is the Motivation for Publishing Scientific Research?
I think I answered your question didn't i ? My answer may not relate to "major" breakthroughs in science and I don't know how superconductor theory got published. But things are not how they used to be a couple of centuries back, when many intellectuals had other jobs and devoted their time to...- omega_M

What is the Motivation for Publishing Scientific Research?
I'd say, if you are in the business of discovering new things, then publishing papers motivated by personal reasons will eventually get the discovery out. the person gets recognition, his research may get a better grant and his paper comes under scrutiny. a number of researchers benefit from the...- omega_M

What is the Motivation for Publishing Scientific Research?
there are only 2 motivations for publishing articles afaik. money (research grants/better position) or recognition. very few people are truly motivated by the desire to spread knowledge and such. Even then, they will write pop sci books and earn royalty money.- omega_M
