Undergrad Thermal equilibrium in open systems
You could define an system in which a flow at T=400K goes in, a flow at T=400K goes out, while inside it is compressed isothermally, couldn't you? It remains in thermal equilibrium while work is done, and it's an open system since there is mass flow in and out.- oobgular

Undergrad Pressure in the corners of a box
I have a fairly simple physics question, which I probably should know, but somehow I have never encountered it before. Suppose you have a pressurized cube, filled to a high uniform pressure P. Will the force from the pressure be larger at the edges and corners of the box? At the corner... -
How Does Altitude Affect Humidity Sensor Readings?
Yes, I can just assume the exponential atmosphere. It's the vapor pressure I'm confused about-- doesn't it change with temperature and density as well?- oobgular

How Does Altitude Affect Humidity Sensor Readings?
Homework Statement So I sent a humidity sensor up in a weather balloon, which gave a reading for relative humidity. I eventually want an absolute humidity, but I am unsure whether I need to correct the output based on the changing density and atmospheric pressure with altitude. Homework...- oobgular

Undergrad Mass & Friction: Cart Question Answered
So suppose two carts roll down a hill. One is more massive than the other, but they both have the same size. Neglecting air resistance, which one reaches the bottom first? Without friction, I think both reach the bottom at the same time. However my first thought was that the heavier car will... -
Far IR light intensity as a function of altitude
Homework Statement Hello, so I'm in a class that is building sensors and sending them up in a weather balloon. For my project, I am wanting to quantify the greenhouse effect by measuring the intensity of infrared light emitted as thermal radiation from the Earth as a function of height-- the...- oobgular

Fluid Mechanics Question -- fluid on block?
Homework Statement A block has dimensions 0.015 x 0.2 x 0.1 meters and weighs 6 Newtons. A 15mm-diameter jet of water is deflected by the block. Find the flow rate needed to tip the block. Homework Equations Mass conservation: ∂/∂t ∫(control volume)ρ d∀ + ∫(control surface) ρv•n dA = 0...- oobgular

Rocket engine operating in a vacuum
Homework Statement So suppose there is a chemical rocket operating in the vacuum of space (assume it's a perfect vacuum). It generates a hot gas with a total enthalpy of h. What's the final speed of the rocket exhaust, in terms of h? Homework Equations The energy equation seems to be useful...- oobgular
