Undergrad Practical cosmic speed limit for macroscopic objects?

Interesting thought .... I think we have to invoke the help of an advanced ET race who could construct a linear accelerator many light years long electromagnetically accelerating an object , but then there's the issue of drag from "vacum " of space , which is not a complete vacum... even so...

Undergrad Using the "triple point of water" to produce ice -- How does that work?

I think what they were doing was subjecting water to high vacum , this would first de gas the water and then cause it to boil , even at close to zero , boiling would continue to extract heat and form ice , triple point ocours at 0.006 atm.

    Air compressor pump HP requirement?

200 Gal air resivoir tank is big .... I don't know what you use this for , most aplications only require short bursts of use (tyre pressure in garage etc), so compressor is only on for a short time... you could just leave things as they are , the overheat breaker is protecting from damage ... If...

Net metering - hybrid solar inverter system question

It's a puzzle to me why we don't see domestic CHP used everywhere ... An IC engine driven by house gas producing electricity which is sold to the grid and will easily cover the cost of the gas , all the waste heat warms the house for free ... The noise is the only problem issue.

Any plausible non chemical rocket based space launch system on Earth?

The above is a bit like Bransons 'Virgin Orbit' idea which failed from lack of finance ... only he took the payload (in a small rocket ) up to Mt Everest height in a 747 , then fired it into orbit ... If you can get above those first 10km of dense atmospher you save a lot of fuel/energy...

Any plausible non chemical rocket based space launch system on Earth?

Well , there won't be much air to hit way above the height of Mt Everest .. Search shows it's a third of sea level atmospheric pressure .... at Mach 20 a nicely pointed nose on the capsule should cut through the remaining air without too much drag or heating , and then a very small booster...

Any plausible non chemical rocket based space launch system on Earth?

Imagine a long tube about a meter in diameter , 100km long . The start of the tube is horizontal but gently curves upwards using a tall mountain , like Everest , for support , perhaps tunneled through the mountain at places , end of the tube is about 30deg to horizontal ... So the tube has air...

Alternative to Lead in car Batteries

Well you can't just replace lead with something else ... there are only just so many battery chemistries that function and are rechargeable ... But LiFePO4 batteries are slowly replacing lead acid car batteries , the problem is they can't deliver the high current required to start the engine ...

Mold in Plastic Water Bottles? What does it eat?

Agreed .... this is photosythesizing plant life and a very good sign, you can buy dried algae in health food shops to eat .... I would imagine you have a pico gram or so ...it would only need the minutest trase of minerals in the water to alow this to grow and they are ALWAYS there in filtered...

    Random Thoughts 7

This video showing high speed reactions is all very interesting but not what the adverage person needs .. We need robotic house servants , INDISTINGUISHABLE FROM HUMANS . not the clunking robot looking contraptions which are state of the art at present .... to pick our dirty laundry from the...

What type of lab to go to for testing my home's tap water?

I think this is what you are looking for .... Just $4 on eBay ! I have one , it comes with a little battery inside it measures the dissolved solids content minerals from rocks the water passes over. You don't really need to know what minerals there's nothing toxic the supplier will make sure...

How to make Sodium Chlorate by Electrolysis of salt water?

Yes potassium chlorate is a much nicer choice , it's not hydroscopic ... I asume this is wanted for use as an oxidiser in makeing rockets or whatever ... with sodium chlorate the rocket mix can quickly become a sticky mess

How to make Sodium Chlorate by Electrolysis of salt water?

This is definitely due to the steel electrodes ... even stainless will react . This is what you need for all electrolysis.... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/303679031119?_skw=titanium+electrodes&itmmeta=01K98QGTQ1F91PG9SWVPYMGWM0&hash=item46b4ae474f:g:GcoAAOSwtnFcdxr- space them close together to...

How to make Sodium Chlorate by Electrolysis of salt water?

Have you callculated how much chlorate you have made in theory by knowing how many coulombs have passes ... it will take a long time to create enough to precipitate out .. Dark solution maybe from carbon electodes particularly if harvested from batteries... titanium mesh electodes would be...

    Undergrad Ramjet effect on drone

Agreed ... this idea was really for cooling of electronics and battery , the rocket was originally sealed which led to electronics fire , they are now trying water cooling! which seem ridiculouse when a reasonable air flow would do.
