Undergrad So we've found the missing "dark matter"?
I'm not sure what they revealed... and how to interpret it. Sounds like in the early universe there were more smaller galaxies which then gradually merged to form the larger ones we see 'today'. That does not mean more matter - only its distribution changed over time. Edit: How this discovery... -

Destined to build a super AI that will destroy us?
Seriously? To me this talk does qualify as FUD and fear mongering. It accumulates so many cliché it is embarrassing to see it on TED. When did Sam Harris become a noted expert on AI and the future of society? AFAIU he is a philosopher and neuroscientist, so what is his expertise on that...- patmurris

Windows 10 Benefits: 2 PCs, Upgrading from Win 7
I learned on Commodore PET and Apple II in the early 80's and previously working in IT and software i went through all versions of MS os since then. Never heard anybody happy with them except Win NT. Maybe i mostly met a one particular kind of techs people, but it seems everybody hates MS stuff...- patmurris

Graduate New Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) Data Release
Thanks for the hint. That makes sense, and it should produce a cross pattern - like the BMW logo. However the RAVE survey only covers a portion of one hemisphere (looking back apparently) so we don't get the whole pattern, but a top view from one of the video does indeed show a 'blue shift' for...- patmurris

Movie Review: Gravity (with George Clooney & Sandra Bullock)
I saw Gravity a couple years ago - something like six month after if came out, and i was very very disappointed. I admit that my expectations where probably a bit on the high side. The movie was highly rated, i like George and Sandra... and space stuff... So what happened? The story line has...- patmurris

Graduate New Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) Data Release
The RAVE project site: https://www.rave-survey.org/project/ In the above image taken from one of the RAVE DR5 video, surveyed stars are shown in 3D and color coded according to their positive or negative radial velocity relative to the Sun. I'm a bit puzzled that stars on one 'side' tend to...- patmurris

What will be the next big revolution?
I like to think that the future is made of two kind of things: those we can think about and those we can't - the unthinkable. Among the things we can foresee there are biotechnologies, nanotechnologies, quantum computing, nuclear fusion, artificial intelligence... and of course fundamental...- patmurris

Stargazing GAIA - 1 billion stars and counting
Gaia Sky WebGL: http://wwwstaff.ari.uni-heidelberg.de/gaiasandbox/webgl At a larger scale we have the Sloan Digital Sky Survey that has mapped distant objects and produced some remarkable maps showing 'sponge' like structures: http://www.sdss.org- patmurris

Stargazing GAIA - 1 billion stars and counting
AFAIU Gaia DR1 is just a 'preview' after only 14 month of operation out of five years. It does not include much more then the Hipparcos catalog - at least regarding parallax data and a few bright stars are not there yet. So right now Gaia Sky is probably not better then the mature and well...- patmurris

What sparked my lifelong fascination with science and the universe?
Hi all! ... i was reading some cosmology articles on phys.org as i often do and sort of noticed something about GAIA down the page on the right without knowing it was a forum post - although it is plainly indicated. I felt like i could contribute to that thread and there i am introducing...- patmurris
